Kimishima: Switch Can Sell as Well as Wii - News

The Nintendo Switch had a strong launch with 2.74 million units sold in March alone. Nintendo boss Tatsumi Kimishima believes that the Switch could sell as well as the Wii.
"For us, being able to reach an installed base of more than 10 million units is fundamental to creating a strong business in a number of different ways," said Kimishima. "Shipping 10 million hardware units this fiscal year, as planned, will give publishers and the rest of our business partners a sense that the future of Nintendo Switch is more promising. This is another part of the reason why we are planning to ship 10 million units this fiscal year."
"The truth is we want to raise the installed base of Nintendo Switch up to the same level as Wii. As we mentioned during our presentation, Nintendo Switch in America had the fastest start of any Nintendo hardware, despite launching in March.
"In the video game business, it’s important for consumers to feel that a sales momentum is going to grow, and we are setting a standard with Nintendo Switch to release a continuous string of major software titles from now on. And if our sales go according to our plan this fiscal year, we will be able to see Nintendo Switch gaining the momentum in which it can approach relative parity with Wii afterwards.
"Plus, considering that Nintendo Switch is a home console video game system that you can take with you on the go so you can play anytime, anywhere, with anyone, we think there will be households that feel as though one is not really enough. This is another point that drives us to match the scale of Wii's popularity with Nintendo Switch."

I reserve judgment on this until E3. March was basically a soft launch. They had basically one game and were marketing it mainly to their most hardcore fans.
It's quite possible that they're holding the more casual oriented stuff for E3, and will make a broader marketing push for the holidays. The system has a lot of attractive features, so with the right software it could definitely happen.
Also, you have to consider the way the market has changed. There are some countries where they didn't push the Wii that they could with the Switch. If they could deal with the piracy issues, the Chinese market could make this very feasible.
People thought Wii would bomb...
I believe it has a chance. And I mean a legit chance. There is a Wii-like aura around this console that Nintendo can, if they market properly, capitalize upon and turn this console into a juggernaut.
If that is to come true there better be no droughts.
Uhmz..its already tracking behind ps4 day one, at some believe with the massive amounts of games ps4 won't reach 100mill.

Anybody who doesn't have a lot of bias against Sony predicts that the PS4 will sell at least 100 million.
PS4 launched during holidays, and the Switch is essentially sold out.
Launching during the holidays has nothing to do with it. It doesn't matter when a new console launches it's going to sell out.
If anything it helps not launching during the holiday season, because that way you can get the inflated launch sales like Switch has for March, and another sales boost when the holiday season rolls around.
There's no magical guarantee that a new system will sell out. If Nintendo made 50 million Wii Us it wasn't going to sell out.
Furthermore, within about a month, the PS3, XBox One, Wii U, 3DS, and Vita were pretty much readily available. So even if selling out day one is a guarantee, that isn't all that relevant at this point.
XL is comparing two supply constrained systems at two different times of the year. It just doesn't make sense.
All things considered, I don't think a $300 machine can outsell to other $250 machines that are stronger.
Can, yes. Will, absolutely not!
Why won't it? If Nintendo keeps it alive as long on the 3DS (and other models) it has a decent lifetime expectancy. They can sell the console on rehashes for a while before throwing out new content.
The big Bambino here is Pokemon. They could release a rehash for Pokemon Sun and Moon which will sell millions of Switches. Then release a fully 3D Pokemon that everyone has been waiting for.
Definitely too early to tell though, but we don't know yet. Hell they could release a Switch with 10 hour long battery and sell more console with it.

I would love to see that happen but I wouldn't bet on it.
Wii was a very unique platform that appealed to gamers and non-gamers. Switch will primarily appeal to people who want a portable console. Year one will be strong though, I'm sure of that.
It won't reach Wii numbers at all. Wii sold to any and everyone gamer and non-gamer alike. Switch is in a market that is currently dominated by cellphones and tablets, cost $299, and has full priced $60 games.
That being said it's pretty much the perfect Nintendo handheld, if they can get better battery life and the price of the device, games, and accessories down. The Switch has the potential to do well even against all the odds, but it's not selling Wii numbers.
I adore the Switch so far but this just seems like it will appeal to a different kind of consumer. I certainly enjoyed the Wii in the college dorms and such, but it was always viewed as being a novelty separate from the PS3 and xbox360... I remember us playing RE4 on the GC and wondering if the Wii was actually weaker than it lol... the switch is more expensive and very much a true gaming device, so even with the handheld mode I just can't see it appealing to as many people. It certainly looks like the attachment rate and software sales (where console makers usually make their money) will be much higher, though.
This is why nintendo keep failing. They gamble, and when they win they claim it's because they are nintendo. Switch is just gambling in the process, the result will be visible after 2-3 years.
