Analyst: PS4 Pro Could be 'Final Nail in the Coffin for Xbox One' - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 12 September 2016 / 9,052 ViewsSome analysts have predicted with Sony beating Microsoft to the market with a more powerful mid-generation console is bad news for the Xbox One.
The PlayStation 4 Pro launches on November 10 for $399, while the Xbox Scorpio doesn't launch until Holiday 2017.

"The only big issue was when Pro would launch and they have a firm date this year and a solid price,” DFC analyst David Cole told Games Industry. “Really this could be a final nail in the coffin for Xbox One now that Microsoft has told consumers to wait until 2017 [for Scorpio].
"Sony will have the powerful system with VR now and a well-executed plan that leaves consumers no reason to wait. It is just an all-around compelling proposition."
"The pricing gives Sony a big advantage. PS4 Slim is competitive with Xbox One S, but PS4 Pro is a bargain [at $399]," said Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. "For the same price as the 2TB Xbox One S, you get 1TB and future proof for 4K. I think this sells very well at holiday, and was surprised it was coming out this year."
Despite launching a year later Microsoft doesn't appear to be worried. They stated the Xbox Scorpio will be the most powerful console ever.

Just a bold speculation to gain attention from the media.
Microsoft killed themselves with their original xbox one 2013 plan, so many gamers left them when that happens(I did and I was a halo and gears lover) kinda sad but years from now we will talk about this like we talk about the downfall of Sega leading up to the Dreamcast
Except Microsoft is the company that could drive their hardware prices to $200 for two years without feeling a sting and Sega was already having a headache to keep up the appearances.
Xbox is going nowhere. Right now, it and Windows are one and the same. Kill Xbox, and they might as well throw Halo, Surface and Windows out of the latter...
"Nail in the coffin?" Nope. Continual success over the Xbox One name brand? Most likely. Or maybe that's what they really meant.
I still defend Mucrosoft's gaming plans are to try and overtake PC market, but they won't abandon their push to consoles, specially because of those XBox Live profits. Try and charge PC users for their regular online multiplayer, and they will laugh at you.
Xbox is a division of Microsoft, and it can go away without Microsoft going away. Shifting to PC only does indeed mean the death of Xbox- just not Microsoft.
The XBox is too popular of a brand to just let it die. I'm sure that, whatever PC plans Microsoft has, they will use the XBox name and caché to push it. Surely they won't use Games for Windows again.
Maybe, maybe not. The only thing we know now is Microsoft has been de-emphasizing their consoles.
Ya know what though, the same was said of PlayStation Network. PS4 is a requirement now, though I know several people that enjoy how well Sony devs can develop a single-player game and have their fill. Sony does good at that. Microsoft is very much about the online with FPS shooters and sports games, especially Madden. That's what Xbox is, a shooter and sports console built and designed to cater to Americans. So, you're right, but people can be swayed if it comes to it. But, Windows Gaming has to compete with Steam and Origin, I suppose, even though Origin isn't much of a competitor.
NeoMahi@ Microsoft gaming would be the more correct since majority of the pc gamers will use windows anyway.
"The pricing gives Sony a big advantage." I agree the pricing is amazing, only time will tell, but PS4 has been ahead all generation.
Amazing for the same games? shrugs
It could be. Console history tells us that best (most powerful) doesn't always mean first. If once PS4P hits the market if people get hyped about the performance bump over PS4og/S and Xb one og/S then having a whole year (probably) alone on the market could make Scoprio irrelevant in the market place and it may fizzle when it finally arrives. And if Scorpio fizzles how much more effort is MS going to put into Xb one as hardware compared to Xbox as a service?
Scorpio is kind of a last throw of the dice for MS in the console space. If it doesn't reinvigorate interest in Xbox then we could be seeing MS look for an exit strategy. That's worst case scenario of course. But I don't think it can be dismissed out of hand.
Also, Xbox was the most powerful console ever at the time. It still only sold 1/6th of what PS2 sold. If that's the MS PR approach then they need a rethink.
MS isn't going anywhere, I'm mainly a PS guy but I expect Scorpio will carve out a decent-sized market for itself.
lol, wut? Sure Xbone won't catch up but a nail in the coffin? Come on.
Eventually, there will always be a "most powerful console ever" each time a company releases a new console.
Think my phone is more powerful that every generation of console up to start of the 7th gen... combined. "Most powerful console ever"... is so hopeful in a silly sort of way.
I don't like this mid-cycle idea, I don't. Its good to see Sony shake up Microsoft a little to humble the company up, as I don't like Microsofts business models. I did with the original Xbox, but that changed with the Xbox 360, which I had coming off the excitement of the Xbox but quickly went back to Sony's camp with the PS3. This shows Sony had a plan all along, and Microsoft caught wind of what was going on, so to save grace, tried to announce it first at E3 to make a splash, but Sony delivered. As far as anyone knows, Scorpio is still just on paper.
Now, back to business models, I find this upsetting now because this is going to become the norm. Consoles, as has been proven by PS3 and Xbox One, have to launch at the right price point. It doesn't matter how much umpf you have under the hood, if it's not priced right, youre gonna struggle. But, we also learned from the PS3, that real innovation comes at a real cost. Nintendo got lucky, but they're struggling now hoping that NX will carry them through or Nintendo may become a software and toy only company.
Finally, with Aaron Greenbergs statement from Microsoft, it sounds to me like Microsoft are exiting the console business to return to their PC roots. With all the David Copperfield marketing going on, he says Scorpio with bring an end to console generations which I think supports my theory. Nvidia and AMD have to thrive. If the PS4 Pro is at 4.2 Tera flops and Scorpio boasts the most power console at 6 Tera flops, we'll, Nvidia can't be manufacturing it because they're expensive, and you've then got compatibility issues coming from AMD optimized games. So technology will quickly catch up and surpass that, quickly and then what? Sounds like an upgradable box like the Steambox, or basically a PC. Microsoft are going back to PC gaming.
I'm at a loss for why these Pro models are even considered a big deal over their vanilla brethren. You're playing the same games, right?
Could you imagine hiring someone that offer this kind of sugar coded analysis. PS4 Pro has a great release date and price but its does have its drawbacks.
Damn about 9 replies and this was uploaded a few minutes ago :-D
The thing is all this talk about power but no talk about games. Sonynis smart by making the Pro powerful enough for 4K and better framerate but also adding HDR to current PS4 which shows that the standard console won't get left behind. They said they made sure that PS4Pro had the same amount of RAM so devs would not ignore either model and both will get the same support.
It is also cost effective and priced right so it is not a huge risk and the standard PS4 will still be the best selling sku on the market period. So it will cover for the Pro's sales if the sales are not that good. MS does not have that security blanket as even the XboxOne S is not flying off the shelves.
The Scorpio will struggle even more because we all know it will be more expensive (we remember how that turned out for the XboxOne at launch) and there eill be no demand for it with the PS4Pro already establi with more support and more exclusives as well as a better VR experience.
All this talk of "power" is just that ...more talk from MS who just wants to grab positive headlines. Wgere Sony beats MS is the value of the PS brand lead by great exclusives with a rich history of great surprises every generation.
I still don't know anyone eith an Xbox no matter what tgey do, but everyone I know has a PS4. What will be the Scorpio's selling point besides hype and power? Lastly devs won't support it cause their games don't sell very well on the current Xbox aside from COD so they won't put effort into the Scorpio.
Is the UHD thing the Blu-ray thing ? I agree with John. But how in the oblivion is something that don't affect games and cut the price for the end consumer is bad for the consumers ?
Too True. I prefer PlayStation and have for a while, but both Sony and Microsoft excel when forced to compete. Look at the mess Microsoft threw together when they first announced the XB1 coming hot off doing very well with the 360. Or the Outrageous price Sony thought people would pay for the PS3 after doing well with the PS2. Both really have money in mind.
