Miyamoto: Star Fox Zero Most Underrated Wii U Game - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 05 July 2016 / 18,049 Views

Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto has named Star Fox Zero the most underrated game on the Wii U in an interview with GameInformer during E3.

"I think personally Star Fox is a really fun game if you sit down and play it," answered Miyamoto when asked what he think is the most overlooked Wii U game. "I think, for example, an elementary school kid who plays it without any preconceived notions, I think it would be really fun for them. I think it’s also really, really fun for siblings to play it together."

Senior product marketing manager of Nintendo of America Bill Trinen added what game he feels is most overlooked: "Personally, I think Pikmin 3 is the most amazing game on Wii U. It’s probably one of my favorite games in the last six or seven years. I think that hardly anyone realizes that the multiplayer bingo battle mode was literally the best new multiplayer mode that has been created since Smash Bros. It is so much fun."

Miyamoto in response to Trinen added: "Pikmin is the kind of game that you have to play maybe three times to get the full effect, but you know, people don’t have a lot of time, so they just clear the stage and just move on. Games are becoming more of a consumable product, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to let a game to sink in and enjoy leisurely."

Can you download Star Fox 64 from the Nintendo store? Because I'd rather play that :)

Star Fox Zero is better, troll.

I actually think he's right. Star Fox Zero is probably the most underappreciated WiiU game. But I actually found another Miyamoto quote more interesting: "Games are becoming more of a consumable product, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to let a game to sink in and enjoy leisurely." This is so true. With replay value becoming less important and scripted action become more common, the reasons to replay video games are dropping generation after generation.

they have to make a game that people want to replay

controls are what kills it. Miyamoto is great but he of all people should be able to appreciate that something like Starfox works perfectly with a traditional analog controller and NO use of stupid motion controls

Just give me classic controls as a patch or something and then I'll agree with you Miyamoto.

"Games are becoming more of a consumable product, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to let a game to sink in and enjoy leisurely."
Is that true, really? There still millions of people who sink hundreds of hours into a single game, whether it's multiplayer or whether it's a RPG of some sort. Perhaps he's right in a narrow sense when considering games that have a short (6 hours or less) single player campaign. I think it's definitely true that people do not value replayability all that much in single player games, they (I) expect a single play through to provide a sense of value for money, and / or for a multiplayer mode to augment or provide the lion's share of the value. But of course getting all your value out of multiplayer is what motivates the industry to ditch single player campaign all together and just have multiplayer, and I don't like that.

Would like to play the game for myself. Waiting for it to be available without Star Fox Guard.

Interesting that everyone in the comments so far agrees with him. I was expecting flame. I'll buy the game sooner or later, but I'm broke now

An amazing game crucified by the closed minds that dont accept anything different.

Some people just don't care for silly "innovative" controls. Nintendo seems WAY more worried about coming up with gimmicks than games.

Too bad that the controls keep me from playing it. Also the lack of a interesting story and characters.

Not the greatest game of all time, but definitely an underrated, flawed gem. I really enjoyed it.

Maybe.

It shouldn't be a secret that Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games ever, and the 3DS remaster is great. I didn't get Zero yet though. I don't know maybe I never will, but I want to want this game and I want to like it. Even though I don't really shy away from unorthodox control schemes, I've gotten scared of what I read and saw in the build up for Zero's release. Mostly gameplay stuff, I wanted a Star Fox more akin to Freelancer, if anyone remembers that old game, so I'm not sure if I will fell Zero would be worth my while to play sadly.

On the other hand, I love Star Fox 64, so how could it go wrong? I'm torn between thoughts. It's actually a similar reason why I never got Yoshi's New Island for example.

Anyway, maybe if the game's price comes down a bit, I'll still get Star Fox Zero.

Do I smell a cult classic? Seriously some games can only be truly appreciated once they get bashed on for a while. I might have to try this considering how many agree with him.

Maybe if Nintendo wasn't stubborn, this game would be great. People wanted alternative controls and longer campaign, and yet nintendo couldn't do that. The game has close to no replay value. Good game, but ruined with some disappointing choices by nintendo

GoOnKid hershel_layton (on 05 July 2016)

Sorry hershel, I don't know what got into you when you typed that, but the games is BASED on replaying it multiple times in order to get better each run in order to break set records as well as your own ones. Also, you need to play it several times to unlock all stages because most stages have alternative routes. And finally, the campaign IS longer. It takes more time to complete one run in SF0 than in SF64.

Guess I played it wrong the entire time. Never played any other Starfox game though. Gonna replay it then. Wonder how much I missed out on

There's already a hidden path in the first Corneria mission. Can you find it without looking it up?

  • 0
Ganoncrotch hershel_layton (on 06 July 2016)

There is 2 exits from the N64 Corneria as well each with their own boss, not to mention that if you go back to the SNES there is 3 separate routes within Corneria, the fact that Star Fox Zero requires it be replayed multiple times is not a new thing to star fox series, anyone who thinks it is must not have played the first 2 titles at the very least.

I'm new to the series though. And I usually don't look online for help whenever I play a game.

Miyamoto the creator of Mario and Zelda overrated? sorry, but no. He might have declined in some respects like most do with age but his accomplishments in the industry are unmatched

Considering Miyamoto is heavily responsible for the games industry in the US even existing as it does, you're factually wrong. After the video game crash, Atari tanked the console market and the arcade market was struggling. Video games were considered a fad that had run their course. Nintendo of America would have gone under if a little arcade called Donkey Kong hadn't turned things around and the console industry in America was then turned around with the NES, but went huge with Super Mario Bros. which are both still pretty high standards of game design that's fun yet simplistic.
