Microsoft Announces Cross Platform Play with Non-Microsoft Platforms - News

Microsoft has announced Cross-Network Play. This includes supporting cross-platform play between games on the Xbox One and Windows, as well as other platforms.
This means Xbox Live users on the Xbox One and Windows 10 will be able to play with gamers on other consoles and PC networks.
"It’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players," said director of ID@Xbox Chris Charla.
"We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."
Psyonix has revealed it will be the first developer to support the new feature with its hit game Rocket League. Cross-platform play with the game will be available between the Xbox One and Windows PC this spring. News for cross-platform play with other platforms will be released later.

Great, it would be awesome if major games like CoD did the same.
Maybe Psyonix is the biggest reason for that!?^^ They pushed really hard to make this happen, but at first Xbox didnt allow it and now look what happened :D :)
Good on Psyonix. Microsoft is actually pretty much against this at some point.
This would be fantastic if it takes off. Most of my friends got Xbox Ones while I went with PS4, and with cross-platform multiplayer it would mean we can play some of the same games online, meaning we don't have to buy second consoles and two subscription services.
This would be perfect if every PS4 player and Xbox one player could play together means i could just have my ps4 and sell the Xbox one
Maybe the success of Minecraft has made MS realize that the best profitability is in cross platform games, hence they want to extend this idea to all types of games. This would be in line with the move to bring Xbox exclusives to Win10. So move away from expensive and hard to predict hw platforms and go for widely supported sw and sw platforms. Well, maybe?
Hmm, should help populate game worlds, regardless of where you're playing. Hope it's A) Highly adopted and B) Not something that comes with a huge Astrix (Something like Microsoft controls it and puts huge restrictions on it or has to make weird little timed exclusive stuff in order to be accepted [all crap that's happened before in deals that seem great from the get go]).

Agreed. It's about time they caught up with the industry in this one regard.
On a more serious note, I really hope this means I get to play with my real world Xbox buddies on all kinds of games now.
$10 more a year for the same service with less games.
