A lot of 360's success came after about 6 years on the market. The rebranding and Kinect was a huge success. At the rate X1 is going, I think it will sell around 60 million units.
I feel like the XB360 never really peaked, it just always outperformed the PS3 in the US. And if the XB1 is outperforming the 360 fairly consistently, then why would it sell 25% less than XB360?
I keep hearing that, but I've never actually seen any evidence of it.
At the same time, the consoles are growing faster in spite of that strong PC market (though, honestly, it might be more accurate to refer to it as "that League market"). And I don't believe casual games running on A9 iPad processors are going to be much of a threat, either.
The reality is that aside from the graphics themselves, we can't go a lot higher than where we are without compromising the durability of the machines. And thanks to the PS4's architecture, Sony can get away with releasing add-ons to improve graphics rather than regular new consoles (at least for a while).if anything, I feel this generation will last longer because PC is pushing more towards low-power games like MOBAs. A suspect this generation will be even longer as a result.
The idea that the current consoles were weak compared to pc hardware at release and the last gen consoles were oh-so-strong is just a lie that goes against all understood history. The 8800 GTX was twice as powerful as the PS3 that released in the same month. A year later the 8800 GT had the same power as the the GTX and was half the price of the ps3. Consoles are still closed systems not at all comparable to PCs whether powerpc or x86.
The reason last gen lasted so long was because internet updates made it possible to implement new features in ways that weren't possible before. It only ended because they were really pushing the limits and developers weren't able to make the games that they wanted. This gen could very much last just as long as the last if people want it to.
@Trentonater Actually, with the way the PS4 architecture is, they can also release add-ons for the PS4 in addition to higher-powered revisions, meaning they can stretch the PS4 pretty far if they want.
@Azuren - Well I don't think the X1 will see a boost mid in its life like the 360 had. Also its uncertain how long they will support it. They should definitely consider beating Sony to the 9th gen. I'm a Xbox fan so I hope it does even better than 60 million, but that's my expectation and would still be a very respectable userbase.
Xbox One is doing great I dont know what everyone is talking about of it failing.
It's obviously the certain people who are not really into Xbox.
While it's certainly not doing badly, the Xbox ONE needs to ramp up it's sales should it want to keep up with the 360. The 360's sales for this years comparision are 3 millions above those from last year, so without a sales increase the advantage will slowly melt away.
I still consider it a failure when you look at the restrictions game developers are having to develop down for. There are still times I regret selling my 360 and upgrading.
