Steam is one of the biggest platforms for PC gaming with more than 125 million registered users and over 6,000 games.

So, anyone who's got Steam opened in the tray but not playing counts as a concurrent user?
I always have steam open, but hardly ever play it tbh. I use origin more because Titanfall. I only play AW and Ghosts on steam really.
@zero129 Considering Steam is set to automatically log on for many people, it's not unreasonable to assume that a decent portion of this figure is people not actually playing a game. I just had a glance at my own Steam and there are only 23 out of 79 in-game. (http://i.imgur.com/68FbNKt.png). Some might be on a forum or something, but regardless that's a significant disparity.
What we can take away from these figures is that Steam is still growing, and that's a good thing. Looking past that though, there's nothing wrong with people wanting to know how many are actually playing a game. It's no different than how people care more about sold than shipped. The two are linked, but the former is more important as a stand alone figure.
I feel confident when I say no one cares about concurrent Steam user records anymore, seeing as how they always get broken within the next week :-D
I like looking at the milestones and seeing how the Steam console (or whatever I have a PC) is coming, it will be interesting to see how the number changes.

I remember when Valve used to announce 'Active' users.
Does this mean they had close to 11million people with steam opened up?
Indeed, this also of course doesn't count the offline users. I tend to use it offline more than online to avoid perky conversations during larger games so it could well be a lot more.
That's a nice achievement so far but I guess it'll never matter to folk not on PC as made evident by the other comments so far.
For the most part, many console gamers have a sour taste when it comes to PC gamers. Something to do with the whole "console peasants" they occasionally hear, and probably again with the whole "PC gaming master race" thing implying that PC gamers are superior in specifications and as people. While you in particular may not be hostile, there are both hostile console gamers and hostile PC gamers who always agitate the whole situation. That said, it is a point to be made that Valve is counting people (like myself) who rarely use Steam but have it idling just because that's what it is set to do by default.
