Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has courted another controversy today, this time with his comments on virtual reality.
Talking to Polygon, Reggie said the following:
"We have knowledge of the technical space, and we've been experimenting with this for a long, long time. What we believe is that, in order for this technology to move forward, you need to make it fun and you need to make it social.
I haven’t walked the floor, so I can’t say in terms of what’s on the floor today, but at least based on what I’ve seen to date, it’s not fun, and it’s not social. It’s just tech."
So it's fairly safe to assume that Nintendo's NX platform will not be making use of virtual reality.

Let me get this straight, he's complaining about the social activity in VR, meanwhile Nintendo's stance on online anything is the most anti-social of all companies.
Hey, there's nothing more social than drawing a picture of a game on the system and then being banned for 36 hours because it has a sword in it.... The policing of their online is outrageous.

It was 'fun'. Despite the fact that it was fun, it was definitely somewhat uneventful.

He's entitled to his opinion but he might want to stay quiet for awhile. Nintendo fans all over the world are rightly wondering if Reggie and Iwata should be shown the door.
What does Nintendo know about social exactly? This must be some sort of joke. LOL
Nintendo is all about local multiplayer, people getting together in the same room and playing together, that's more social than online imo.....
You may disagree with him but look at Smash bros, Mario Kart, the accociated tournaments, Mario Party, all the coop platformers et cetera. What he says is a fact
Pretty sure this can easily be made social with some programming a la "Home" or of the like. Jesus Reggie, it's not that hard to think about. Also, I just spent three days on the E3 show floor, and aside from one demo, all of the VR that I tried out was VERY fun!

I personally think that provided that VR is done right, it could definitely be fun.
Is it social? Not yet, however, one day we should be able to have an MMORPG landscape similar to that of Sword Art Online. Hopefully the game won't kill us though ;)
VR is fun, its social online, and yes its just tech that will change the industry over time.
You're right. VR should be more social, like playing Metroid Prime or Bayonetta 2. You know, the types of games you play with friends in the room.

G** it Reggie, you might be a great f2f pitchman sometimes, but I'm losing confidence in your ability to run NOA effectively. Your hands might be tied at E3 by what the home office allows and provides - but knucklehead statements like this are not helping. Facebook didn't spend a billion on Oculus because it can't be social or fun. But ya know what? Of course hardware isn't fun, it's just purposeless junk without software! And you know what else? It's not like we wanted Super Mario to be a MMO anyway. Plus Sony seems to think they can get good local multi out of Morpheus, so quit making excuses and give us what we want big N!

He's right, it isn't social....and no, going online and screaming obscenities at strangers is not considered 'social'
Hmm, seeing how VR has you wearing a head set, it would seem kind of hard to have a social aspect to VR when you can't really socialize with people while wearing a headset....
You can criticise him for his failures at this year's E3, but he is right about this VR that isn't VR. It's a screen in your face that makes you look like a dork.
Anyone pointing out Nintendo's lack of online as a reason for Nintendo being 'anti-social', has forgotten that Nintendo's 'social' comes from the older days when social meant people were in the same room with you, rather then a voice or text traveling from another part of the world.
Maybe that's the problem though. A very limited and old fashioned idea of what 'social' is.
Can't wait to get the FAX addon for the N3DS so I can send messages to friends again!
I can't wait to gather in the same room and play Star Fox! ....
