People forget that Wii was actually dominating PS2 even more, but we all know how that eventually ended. It's going to look like Wii is beating PS4 because Wii's first 4 years were second to none in console sales history. Problem was, after all the Zelda, Mario, SSB, and Mario Kart hype fizzled out, Nintendo pretty much had nothing more to throw out, as they were more focused on creating the Wii-U. Just like every Nintendo console, the Wii's best years were short lived. PS1, PS2, and PS3 have all proven how Sony consoles just keep going. So long as PS4 continues to grow and outpace the PS2, it will exceed the Wii's sales by far.

first year*

Wii sales were immense for a short amount of time, and then suddenly tanked when people realized "This isn't all that fun".

This graph doesn't make much sense once you realise that VGC has Wii sales numbers at that time above actual shipments, and they never bothered to correct that.

What are you talking about? That Graph doesn't show sales... Its a representation of the difference in sales between the Wii and PS4... The Wii Shipments around the one year mark were at 20.13 million which is LESS than the just over 15 million Sales mentioned above

Last time I checked, Wii sold just over 20 million in it's first year so not sure where the 15 million came from unless they sold 5 million in the rest of November which is unlikely.

Now do a shipments chart :D Would be interesting to see

I kind of want to see a PS2 comparison. It would be more comparable, and I think Wii was ahead of PS2 at this point and we know how that ended so comparing to Wii doesn't tell us much.

The PS4 is tracking a head of the PS2. The Wii is the only one to sell faster than PS4 (though PS4 will sell for longer and likely in more units).

The Wii is, however, an anomaly. It sold not so much as a video game console as it sold as a toy and trendy fitness machine.

I guess there is no edit button... So I'll make another comment.

I neglected to mention that the $250 price tag vs. $400 one is relevant.

Not surprising, the first few years were incredible for the Wii. It was like a firecracker, it burnt really bright right out of the gate but fizzled out quickly. The fact the PS4 is comparable to early Wii sales is the real shocker though. It will be interesting to see how it compares by year 3 as the first 3 years of the Wii were the strong points. If it keeps up for 3 years, it will likely outsell it in the long run.

Well PS4 was slightly ahead in shipments at the end of September, so i highly doubt the gap in sales was close to 2 million.

Wii was at 20.13 million shipped at the end of it's first full year so we will have to wait until next year to get a good idea how big the gap really is.

The wii sold out for 2 years... so yeah, the gap is easily that big.

Remember, the Wii had shortages of shipments. Pretty much it sold through for two years. This was especially true around the holidays.

Even with the Destiny boost the Wii is dominating. And people said that the Wii wouldn't work for Nintendo.

I remember all the slamming the Wii got and then it launched and people were having a hard time getting one lol

The chart represents sales of the course of one year... How is the Month of the Destiny boost relevant here?

Imagine if Destiny hadn't existed.

Funny like PS4 is still above Wii lifetime but thanks the undertracked power of VGChartz Wii outsell him by 2,5 million...

Considering how top-loaded Wii was and how much lower it started in price, imagine how far the long legs of a Sony console will carry PS4 with this start

Landguy drake_tolu (on 17 November 2014)

you do realize they are talking Wii not WiiU?

I said THE WII.
PS4 is massive undertracked, have for sure sold 12.5-13 M by end of September, and by end of October is probabily 13.5-14M!
VGC undertracked PS4 by 1M to 2M...
