Report: Cheaper Xbox One Processor in Production, Opens Door for Slim Xbox One - News

AMD, the chip designer, has developed a cheaper, smaller and cooler 20nm version of the main processor in the Xbox One. That opens up the possibility of a slim Xbox One in the near future. This is according to a report on Eurogamer.
The processor inside the Xbox One is one of the most expensive parts of the console. Each one costs Microsoft around $50. While it is not known how much cheaper the smaller processor will cost, it will help reduce the heat and could increase the power of the processor by 30 percent. However, in the past console makers have not increased the power of a console.
The smaller processor will create less heat, which means a smaller cooling assembly will be required to prevent the console from overheating. That could lead to a smaller console. That would lead to less packaging and more cost savings in shipping the consoles.

A slimmer Xb one would be a welcome move I would think. More power huh? Is that a potential benefit in all cases of processor shrinkage?
So a smaller SoC will be out for PS4 as well since there practically the same though Microsoft's is larger due to the ESRAM.

If this is true especially 30 percent more processor power I am waiting to get an X1. I was going to get one today with the price drop but 30% more power is a lot.
I would be pissed if the new one came out early next year and could do 1080p 60 frames on games the old one can't. i am going to wait and see and just stick with my PS4 for now.

Have you looked inside the xbox1? It is 65% empty already all due to the fear of overheating. It is way over engineered and goes to show that many western manufacturers still cannot build some machines with efficiency the way other Asian and European countries can. Namely the WiiU and PS4 are very tightly built machines and they are not suffering from heat exhaustion. This is MS scared to death of another red ring and going overboard to prevent it. A new AMD chip is not going to be the game changer to make it smaller.
the method used for the CPU cooler on the XB1 was more like the traditional PC like cooler while on the PS4 they used a blower style vapor chamber, the blower/vapor chamber works much better than the standard heat sink/fan arrangement, i don't think Microsoft will shrink the XB1 and just carry on with the current size of the XB1 and Sony will be no different, by switching to 20nm they will make the consoles more efficient.
