7th Gen vs 8th Gen - Aligned Sales Comparison - September 2014 Update - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 13 October 2014 / 13,163 ViewsWelcome to the first of a new series of monthly articles. This new series will be comparing combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compared the home consoles, as well as handhelds.

This first chart is comparing aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.
The 8th generation took an early lead, due to the strong launches of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 compared to their predecessors. However, by the ninth month 8th gen fell behind the 7th gen. This is due to the strong sales of the Wii.
The 7th generation handhelds in its first 11 month have sold 23.25 million units, while the 8th generation has sold 20.83 million units. The 7th generation currently leads by 2.41 million units.
7th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 23,254,695
8th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 20,842,068
Total Lead: 2,412,627 – 7th Generation

This second chart is comparing aligned handheld sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the DS and PSP combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.
The 8th generation fell behind in the first month, but was able to take a lead in the 11th and 12th month. However, by that time sales of the DS and PSP took off and handheld sales have quickly fallen behind for the 8th generation.
The 7th generation handhelds in its first 34 month have sold 76.72 million units, while the 8th generation has sold 45.87 million units. The 7th generation currently leads by 30.85 million units.
7th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 76,721,400
8th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 45,870,323
Total Lead: 30,851,077 – 7th Generation

Damn you Vita!
Damn you Wii U!
Yay, my idea got picked! Thanks :)
Very interesting data. Just two remarks :
-
it would be interesting to have a PS3+360 vs PS4+X1 chart, because most of the decrease in 8th gen is due to WiiU considerably underperforming compared to Wii.
- the handheld figure for gen 8 seems wrong. It should be 45 3DS + 9 Vita = 54m
I would say a PS3/360 against a Xbox ONE/Wii U would be more correct, considering the PS4 is basically taking the Role of the Wii (outselling their competitors by 2/1); The Wii U btw takes the Role of the 360 (Launching 1 year earlier with weak sales but slowly getting better) and the ONE takes up the PS3's role (most expensive at launch, selling none too hot but gradually getting better)
it's aligned launches, so 3ds sales are only for a period as long as the vita has been out for.
Wii and DS, damn behemoths
Finally, a comparison chart that is actually interesting!
I'd say homeconsoles are holding up pretty good, considering the Wii to Wii U drop. Handhelds though. It's falling of a cliff.
Too early to call on the Consoles holding up. At month 11 (the most recent console data) the 8th gen handhelds were actually outselling the 7th.
Handheld gaming is dying faster than most would have ever imagined. Wonder how the home consoles will be doing 3 months from now after holiday sales.
Awesome numbers. Last gen Wii dominated and most of the people purchasing were non gamers and casual gamers. This gen is doing fine.
Wii can hold a lot of it's success to all the soccer moms, gyms, retirement homes & youth centers that purchased one.
PS4 trained home sales, and 3DS portable.
You mean, PS4 leads home console sales?
Very interesting !!! Thanks !
The handhelds will just keep dropping faster and faster. Then again the consoles will be way down as well, though I imagine that the ps4 plus xbox one will be greater than the ps360 in the end.
Wii sales really slowed down after 3 years, PS4/XB1/WiiU should gain grounds then.
Wii has done an amazing job
Man, those handhelds market has shrunk a ridiculous amount. 3DS is doing about half of what DS was and Vita's sales are.... just plain bad....
On the flip side, PS4 and even XB1 are killing it, which is awesome to see. It's a shame the WiiU isn't pulling better numbers though.
Over all, gen8's sales have definitely taken a hit compared to gen7, which is a bit disappointing but to be expected considering how many options people have for gaming these days.
It'll be very interesting to see how the home consoles will hold up this holiday; right now we're looking at a shrinking market, which will be the first one since the Crash in the 80's. Although, it's waaaay to early to really tell if this is the case.
Regarding the handhelds... daaauuuyym! DS+PSP DOMINATED and are absolutely killing 3DS+PSV... I'm telling ya, next gen only Nintendo will make a portable
It'll be interesting to see how thing go over the holidays...
well we dont have the non gamers and casual ones from the wii, so sales are less
Geez Vita!
