Sony: Vita a Success in Japan, Western Future Uncertain - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 14 July 2014 / 7,722 Views

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House has talked with IGN about the future the PlayStation Vita. He is confident about the future of the Vita in Japan, as the handheld is able to put up sales similar to the 3DS. However, sales in the West have been poor and he is uncertain about its future.

"I certainly think you’ll still see Vita as a triple-A machine in Japan where it has a different function with the console dynamic of the marketplace," said House. "That for me is a given."

"It’s hard to say in terms of the other markets," he continued. "I think Remote Play is still in its nascent stages, I think we need to have better understanding. We know a lot of players are embracing it and using it and seem to like the experience a lot, but necessarily that changes the dynamic."

Remote Play has been popular for people who own a PLayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. However, that will shift the focus of the Vita from a AAA handheld system to an add-on for the PlayStation 4. So the focus of the handheld may be shifting.

Vita in Japan will sell 10 million IMHO.
Yeah, maybe less, but sure 7-9 million, and isn't bad.
In western bhè, i predict 3 million in Americas and 5 million in Europe... but with one GTA, one God Of War, and one Gran Turismo, maybe more... i think that best scenario for Vita is 30 million.
My prediction is 20 million.

Is Vita a success in Japan? It's only sold 3 million units so far, and sales are really low for 2014. Might only sell 5 million lifetime (half of PSP)

Half of PSP sales would be 10M, you need to improve your math

Im alright with the Vita staying a AAA machine in Japan....as long as those games get Localized! Though without something in the West it still wont sell. Remote Play is cool, but not worth buying a console for (and now with Playstation TV, there is a cheaper option anyway)

21k vs 27k after the vita had a "big" game...Wait until November, Nintendo will remind them what a big game is again.

Vita can't even survive in Japan without a real Final Fantasy,Kingdoms Heart and Metal Gear Solid

Vita a success in Japan and has similar sales to 3DS? Seems like a news from a weird parallel universe has slipped over here ...

To be fair, its only this year the man is talking about since the Vita is selling better weekly in Japan than did in 2012 or 2013.
