PlayStation 4 Outsells the Wii U Worldwide - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 February 2014 / 36,358 Views

Sony launched their 8th generation home console, the PlayStation 4 launched in North America on November 15 and November 29 in Europe. This is almost exactly one year after Nintendo launched their 8th generation home console, the Wii U. In just over three months the PlayStation 4 has topped Wii U worldwide sales to become the bestselling 8th generation home console.

The PlayStation 4 has managed 5,847,194 units as of the week ending February 22. The Wii U has managed to sell 5,765,484 units as of the same date. The PlayStation 4 launched in Japan this week with sales of 319,689, which is what helped it top the Wii U.

The PlayStation 4 has been selling out almost everywhere since it launched. When you align the launches with the Wii it has managed to sell one million more units in the first three months.

Official Nintendo site says: Wii U sold 5.86 million of units until december 2013.
Vgcharts says the wiiu sold 5.8 so far. (February 2014 almost March).
Has a stranger thing with Vgcharts numbers.

Official numbers:

The Nintendo site shows 5.86 million sold to retailers, aka shipped. Not sold to consumers (the real number that matters).

This actually incorrect. Remember Nintendo announced the Wii U sold 5.8 million units of hardware by December 31st. So the Wii U didn't sell a single console from Dec 31st to the end of February? Take a look here if you don't believe me: http://www.polygon.com/2014/1/29/5356772/nintendo-falls-short-of-hardware-and-software-sales-forecasts 3rd paragraph down.

Wii U should be about 6.1 Million if you do the math.

That was shipped, not sold. these are estimates of sold to customer numbers.

@ Lyrikal
But the rate Xb one is selling right now it'll take ages for Xb one to overtake Wii U. Last place this gen will go to whichever of the Wii U or Xb one can't do anything meaningful to improve sales. At present there seems to be more that MS can do to improve Xb one sales, so PS4>>Xb one>Wii U seems like the most likely outcome.

YA in a perfect world and xbox1 without a kinect selling for $350.00 it might have dominated america again, but really MS will get second this gen and probably lose a lot of gained ground because of weaker hardware and forced kinect.

Congratz to Sony!

I'm hoping to buy a PS4 in march :) I'll also buy a PSVita and a WiiU. Playstation is the system I use most and like the best but Mario and friends, Zelda etc is a MUST so that WiiU will be mine. Nintendo need my support now as well even though they hit a homerun with Wii and DS. 3DS are also the leader of the nextgen of handhelds.

I remember when you did an article similar to this about the DS overtaking PS2, and the same problems were in that article.

William. Update it, so it doesnt look factual and it actually includes the word "estimation".

My prevision for 31 March:
1)PS4=6,5 milion
2)Wii U=6 milion
