Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.
This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling PlayStation 3 games. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling games in June 2013 and the week before that the top 10 selling games of the first half of 2013 (Updated to first half of 2013).
Looking at the top 10 bestselling PlayStation 3 Games, one was released in 2007, one in 2008, one in 2009, two in 2010, three in 2011, and two in 2012.
The two titles released in 2010 sold a combined 22.48 million units or 11.24 million units on average per title. The three titles released in 2011 sold a combined 25.71 million units or 8.57 million units on average per title. The two titles released in 2012 sold a combined 17.29 million units or 8.54 million units on average per title.
The top 10 bestselling PlayStation 3 games sold a combined 91.80 million units. The top title, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, topped 12 million units sold. The top five titles all sold more than 10 million units. Grand Theft Auto IV has sold 9.81 million units to date and has been averaging 9,000 units sold per week since June. The game should top 10 million units sold by the end of the year. The entire top 10 sold more than six million units.
Looking at sales by publisher, just one title is first party, published by Sony, while nine are third party. Five of the titles are published by Activision, three by Electronic Arts and one by Take-Two. The five Activision titles are all for the Call of Duty franchise, while two of the three Electronic Arts titles are for the FIFA franchise.
The one Sony title, Gran Turismo 5, sold 10.49 million units. The five Activision titles sold a combined 51.87 million units or 56.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The five Electronic Arts titles sold a combined 19.63 million units or 21.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one Take-Two title, Grand Theft Auto IV, sold 9.81 million units.
The top 10 bestselling PlayStation 3 games as a graph really shows how first person shooters is the strongest genre on the platform. Six of the top 10 titles are an FPS. However, the top 10 is more diverse than the Xbox 360 top 10 where eight of the top 10 titles are an FPS.
Only one of the top 10 bestselling PlayStation 3 games is an exclusive. However, The Last of Us has been able to sell nearly three million units in just six weeks and has a chance of entering the top 10 chart in the future.
Here are the sales outside the top 10: The top 18 titles sold more than five million units and the top 76 titles sold more than two million units.
The PlayStation 3 has sold 78.36 million units to date and will easily cross 80 million sold by the end of the year. There have also been 682.23 million games sold for the PlayStation 3.
Electronic Arts has sold the most games for the PlayStation 3, with 122.09 million. Sony has sold 118.25 games for the PlayStation3, Activision 89.49 million games, Ubisoft 49.00 million games, and Take-Two 39.71 million games.
If you look at game sales by genre the action is by far the most popular with 185.97 million games sold for the genre. There have also been 147.93 million shooter games sold and 97 million sports game sold. There have been 61.43 million racing games sold, 46.99 million RPG games sold, 41.28 million fighting games sold, and 32.08 million adventure games sold.
