Sony: Developers Can Use the Cloud for Computations for the PS4 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 13 June 2013 / 12,278 Views

Sony Computer Entertainment's Shuhei Yoshida has told Polygon that developers can use the cloud for computing calculations, however the option is not required. He doesn't believe that every title will need the extra boost in power, but it is there if any developers want to take advantage of it.

"Linking, matchmaking…there are already many computations being done on the cloud side. We don’t believe every title needs that," said Yoshida. "But if your title needs [an] online connection to provide some online features: Go for it."

Sony is already using cloud-based technology when it comes to streaming games online, as well as the ability to instantly play demos without having to download them. Sony also revealed that its Gaikai technology will come out in the US in 2014 for the PlayStation 4.

Of course every developer can use cloud technology in games. You can employ cloud computing on a 3DS if developers choose so. Yoshida is essentially just pointing out that MS' marketing pitch about cloud computing is basically just a ruse to make XBox One look magical.

It is not about the theoretical ability but the reliability of the infrastructure. MS is using the established Azure platform. Sony is expanding on Gaikai but they don't seem as ready yet. Nintendo's Cloud is still yet to come. Time will only tell if this cloud thingy is actually beneficial or the next fad.

lol love it, I basically read this as them saying that there is enough power in the box to not need to be connected to the net for your cars to have the AI to drive into walls and crash.

I absolutely can't stand that logic anyway for the new forza game... there is no AI without the cloud? so .... in offline play all the cpu cars just drive into a wall? or don't drive at all.

I thought that the Cloud only saves the AI profiles ("drivatars") in Forza 5 and when you are online you download some of them.
The AI is of course calculated locally afterwards.

What? I thought this is crap, so why use it?

No one said it was crap. They called bs when Microsoft stated Xbox One games could look far better because it had the power of cloud computing.

Of course they say this. Again just PR speak. Unless we know the power of their cloud (server count, speed, dedicated resources, etc) this is meaningless. Purely PR to try and downplay an advantage of Xbox Live/One.

True, the online is the only advantage the xbox has anymore and time will tell if either next gen console's online servers are as good as they are saying. I'm leaning heavy to PS4 right now and servers are the only thing I am a little worried about. Now that they are charging for PS+ they are going to match microsoft I think. They are already bringing party chat which is just another thing to cross of xbox's short advantage list.

I do not think sony will setup several server to support cloud based computing. They will more likely permit developers to set-up their own. Since Sony seem to think that cloud based processing is not going to be usefull I don't see why they should support the cost of it.

If MS can speak bullshit, so can Sony. Why let MS get away with their bullshit and sound like they have an advantage? By all means Sony, play their game and confuse the hell of everyone too! Don't let MS fool everyone.

So when someone says it's PR speak from Sony he gets thumbed down? Everyone was saying that exact thing about MS. The community on this site has surely gone to hell.
