by William D'Angelo , posted on 29 April 2013 / 28,023 Views

Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling Final Fantasy games. Last week we looked at the top 10 selling Metroid games and the week before that the top 10 selling The Legend of Zelda games.

Top 10 Selling Final Fantasy Games

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Final Fantasy games, three were released in the 1990’s, six were released in the 2000’s, and one was released in the 2010’s.

The three released in the 1990’s, Final Fantasy VII (PS), Final Fantasy VIII (PS) and Final Fantasy VI / III (SNES), sold a combined 21.00 million units or 35.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The six games released in the 2000’s, one for the PlayStation One, three for the PlayStation 2, one for the PSP, and one released for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, sold a combined 34.56 million units or 59.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The one game released in the 2010’s, Final Fantasy XIII-2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, sold 2.96 million units or 5.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

The top 10 bestselling Final Fantasy games sold a combined 58.52 million units. The top two titles sold more than eight million units, while the top seven sold more than five million units. The top nine sold more than three million units, while the last game in the top 10 has sold 2.96 million units to date and should eventually cross the three million mark.

Five of the top 10 games were published by Square, while the other top five were published after Square merged with Enix and became Square Enix. The merger occurred on April 1, 2003 and 80 percent of the staff at the time were made up of Square employees.

Top 10 Selling Final Fantasy Games

The top 10 bestselling Final Fantasy games as a graph shows how Final Fantasy VII is by far the most popular title in the franchise. If you combine the sales of all the other versions of the gamer released later on it easily sold well over 10 million units.

If the two versions of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 weren’t combined they would be much lower on the charts. Both games were released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the same day. In reality, only the PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII would be in the top at number seven with sales of 4.95 million units.

Looking at the top 10 by platform one was released for the SNES, three for the PlayStation One, three for the PlayStation 2, one for the PSP, and two were released simultaneously for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The three titles released for the PlayStation One sold a combined 22.88 million units or 39.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The three titles released for the PlayStation 2 sold a combined 19.29 million units or 33.0 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two titles released for the PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 sold a combined 9.86 million units or 16.8 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

19.55 million of the games sold in the top 10 were in North America or 33.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. 12.25 million of the games sold were in Europe or 20.9 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. 22.98 million of the games sold were in Japan or 39.3 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Here are sales figures outside the top 10: The entire Final Fantasy franchise sold more than 100 million units worldwide. More than 31 million units sold were in North America, more than 16 million were in Europe and more than 46 million were in Japan.

The top 15 titles sold more than two million units units and the top 25 titles sold more than one million units. The top 42 sold more than 500,000 units and the top 63 sold more than 200,000 units.

I love seeing Crisis Core, FXIII and FXII on the top 10. Despite all the crap said, they are wonderful additions to the franchise.

Id like to see how many Final Fantasy games have been sold over PSN, or even on PC. Im 99.9% sure that Final Fantasy VII is a 10 Million seller!

of course it is when it would only need to have sold 1/4 of a million between the PC version, and the psn downloads on both the PS3 and the PSP. also isn't it now available on the PC again from the square site as a digital download?

I personally am offended that some of Final Fantasy games sold better or worse than some other of these games. But I guess that's inevitable...

Too bad sales doesn't mean quality. I sure as hell would not put X as number 2 on that list and III/VI would be higher if this was based on quality.

Great article - I love reading about the top 10 of different game series.

I'd love to see Top 10 Golf Games and Top 10 Tycoon Games in the future.

Clearly Final Fantasy VII was the peak for the series both in terms of sales and review scores. since FFVII, Final Fantasy series sales have been in decline.

These numbers are probably inaccurate anyway.

I would like to see Final Fantasy returning to Nintendo again. To me the Nintendo-Final-Fantasies are still the best.

Yes, because higher sales mean more fun, right? Right? Also you seem to not know that FF6 for SNES for example was never officially released in Europe and you don't consider that the gaming market grew in the past years...

So this gen COD were the games with most fun, sure. And stop telling me what I should do - I won't and especially won't listen to a random guy here.
I keep my opinion: The Nintendo-versions were the best for me.

So by your logic Bristow, Nintendo's games must be more fun than all of Sony's since they sell so much more, right lol?

Releasing a couple of months after the PS2 launched in nearly every region probably didn't help things.
