Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 bestselling fighting games. Last week we looked at the top 10 bestselling games in 2007 and the week before that the top 10 bestselling games in October 2012. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Looking at the top 10 bestselling fighting games, five were released in the 1990’s and five were released in the 2000’s. One game was released in 1992, one in 1993, one in 1996, one in 1998, and on in 1999. Two games were released in 2000, one in 2000, one in 2005 and one in 2008.

The top 10 bestselling fighting games sold a combined 58.71 million games. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) is the only game to sell more than 10 million units during the year, while the top six games sold five million or more units. Also eight of the top 10 games sold four million or more units, however the other two games did sell three million or more units.

Three games are for the PlayStation, two are for the PlayStation 2, two are for the Super Nintendo, and one apiece for the Wii, GameCube, and Nintendo 64. The three PlayStation games sold a combined 16.48 million units, or 28.1 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two PlayStation 2 games sold a combined 7.92 million units, or 13.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10. The two Super Nintendo games sold a combined 10.40 million units, or 21.4 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling fighting games as a graph really shows how one franchise, Super Smash Bros. has topped any other in the genre. The three Super Smash Bros. games sold a combined 23.91 million units or 64.26 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

There are also four Tekken games in the top 10, Tekken 2 (PS), Tekken 3 (PS), Tekken 5 (PS2), and Tekken Tag Tournament (PS2). The four games sold a combined 20.82 million units or 35.5 percent of the total games sold in the top 10.

There are no games on a Microsoft or Sega platform in the top 10. The bestselling fighting game on a Sega platform is Mortal Combat (GEN) at number 25 with sales of 2.67 million units. The game came out in 1992. The bestselling fighting game on a Microsoft platform is UFC 2009 Undisputed (X360) at number 38 with sales of 1.97 million units.

As a quick note here are other software sales for the fighting genre: The genre has sold a total of 388.75 million units. 72.70 million fighting games were sold on the PlayStation, 90.59 million were sold on the PlayStation 2, and 37.93 million have been sold on the PlayStation 3 to date. 22.08 million fighting games were sold on the Nintendo 64, 18.21 million were sold on the GameCube, and 21.24 million have been sold on the Wii to date. 12.99 million fighting games were sold on the Xbox and 30.43 million have been sold on the Xbox 360 to date.

Glad to see no-one starting an argument on whether Smash Bros. is a fighting game.

Good to see Smash on top. If the GCN had more sales then Melee would probably be number 1.

SSB deserves this, there are very few games that I can remeber having more fun in than SSB brawl and melee

Give a try to Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. It's different but works well for local multiplayer fun.

Basically Smash, Tekken and Street Fighter domination. Wonder if we'll ever see another franchise there.

So basically fighting games that focus more on local multiplayer have more sales success than those that focused on online multiplayer?

"Two games were released in 2000, one in 2000" should read "one in 2001" Just a correction :P
