Pachter: Next Xbox to be Subscription Based - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 11 July 2012 / 6,825 Views

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that Microsoft's next generation console will follow the smartphone business model. The console itself will be cheap, but users will have to purchase a subscription.

"I’m pretty confident that in the US Microsoft is going to partner with a cable TV provider, so I expect that the console will be priced like a smart phone," said Pachter. "I expect you’ll be paying $99 for the console with a cable TV subscription."

He continued by making another bold prediction that the console will be a Smart TV and will use SmartGlass day one.

"Console will have to be multiple purpose devices, though. The Xbox 720, this is my prediction, is going to be your television as well. You’ll be able to tune into television through it. You wont need a 'smart TV' when you’ve got an Xbox 720, it will be your television and your internet. It’s going to be open architecture and I think it’s real trick will be that one Xbox will be able to display television to as many screens as you have in your possession."

Pachter should be subscription based, that way we won't have to hear his crap all the time.

I dont get it. His comment on this on seems pretty spot on. Why the hate? I know hes made some bad predictions in the past, but even if this one is wrong, its still a good guess, therefore I dont see how this is crap.

because no one in their right mind would pay to use a console. people already hate paying for gold and thats only to play online.

patcher either is wrong or "predicts" something obvious, looks like he will be wrong on this one.

ROFL, one can really hope. Be the doom for me of said console. I must be one of the few that like paying $400-500 for a new console, and all it a day with that nonsense. I love owning property. Subscription anything would PISS me the F- off.

People have been predicting that before Pachter. This isn't the first time the Microsoft subscription situation has come up.

Of course you won't--the 360 is this gen :P

Why oh why do you keep quoting this man?

Not going to happen. Hardcore early adopters don't want a cable service, they already have cable.

Darth Tigris sperrico87 (on 14 July 2012)

Then they'll just buy it outright like they always have, just like you can with smartphones ... ?

That, or he isn't everyone therefore he is wrong.

If they keep this up, they're going to "subscribe" themselves out of the games industry.

It is a good business model, and Microsoft has never been so well established in the VG industry as it is now.

It's a business model that can easily be copied but it smacks of money grubbing.

Microsoft can subscribe to these nuts.

I'm sorry, but this guy sounds like he has no idea what he's talking about. Microsoft would be absolutely stupid to partner with a cable provider when people are dropping their cable subscriptions like hotcakes in exchange for netflix and other online streaming options.

If this is true...... no thanks.......

That would make it too easy for Nintendo, especially if Sony goes digital only. Not that I believe any of this.

It is doubtfull but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. Look at all the idiots paying for LIVE for no reason...

Really stupid if it were true, but won't be most likely accurate at all. The only console I am 100% sold on is the PlayStation 4 for the next generation. I will buy that, but everything else has to really earn it this time around. I don't care to indulge MicroSoft if their gaming strategy is the same as it's now. Any subscription model would be a reason for me not to get it for sure.

And this sounds really dumb, "it will be your television and your internet". So it will be my 50MB Comcast high-speed internet, and my Comcast cable with all the good channels like Starz, Showtime, HBO, ect..? I am pretty sure--Not. God knows what Patcher is implying with that nonsense statement, but I don't want anything similar. If PS4 did something weird like this, it could put me off of my "sure buy". All I want is a console in the same sense as today's are.

Mr Puggsly (on 13 July 2012)

I'm not sure if I even understand the logic of this. If my console has the same business model as a phone or cable, wouldn't it stop working if I miss a payment?

Terrible idea and it won't happen. Safe bet MS will do the same thing next gen as they're doing now.

Or they could just screw your credit to hell.

Nem (on 12 July 2012)

I'm already planning to leave the xbox and go back to the playstation next gen because of P2P online gaming. This just makes it sound like its the right decision even more.

So MS effectively shuts itself off from people who are with a different cable provider? Doubtful. I can't see MS doing anything which inhibits people from buying a 360, and having to switch cable supplier seems like a big inhibiting factor.

Add your comment... Why is it so hard to believe? You guys sound real dumb! "I wont buy one if they do", " they will subscribe themselves right out of..." stfu. You think they won't sell stand alone consoles too? People bitch about anything. If the PS4 decides to have a direct TV package, that won't. Stop me from buying one if I could buy one sans the service. I think you are stupid fanrats who never planned on buying one...bitches.

S.T.A.G.E. klumminati (on 13 July 2012)

This is the videogame industry, not the cellphone industry. If they want to sell a console to consumers it better be affordable and contract free. In a debt riddled country like America attaching more debt to people just for a gaming console is not the smartest way to go. If people wanted an expensive gaming system they need look no further than the PC.

Pesmerga7551 klumminati (on 13 July 2012)

It does sound a little laughable, but think about what Patcher is implying with this nonsense. If this horse-turd came true, I wouldn't buy the x720 either actually. If Sony did this, I'd question my for sure buy too. And guess what, there isn't anything wrong with this feeling, as people have expectations. As long as you're not BS'n, I don't get WTF your issue is.

I don't think you get how wild this is, way overly melodramatic.

  • 0
withdreday klumminati (on 13 July 2012)

Yeah, and what if a person misses a payment on the subscription? Will they stop the console from working? All and all, this better off just being a rumor.

Kinda ridiculous you got voted down. You made one of the most sensible comments here. This community is just failing more and more by the day ...

^Why cause we don't drop down on whatever Microsoft does no matter what? That's ridiculous.

Everyone's not a fanboy like you are.
