NPD February Sales Results - News

by Miles Taven , posted on 08 March 2012 / 9,823 Views

NPD has released February 2012 figures for the US video game market. Hardware and boxed software fell 20 percent to $1.06 billion but consumers spent $500 million to $600 million on digitally distributed games, rentals, used games, subscriptions and add-on content. Overall the market rebounded after January's surprising results, but still remains on a downward trend.

Microsoft announced the Xbox 360 was the best selling home console (426k) for the 14th month in a row, with the last 12 months seeing above 40% unit marketshare. Nintendo also released data this month, with month over month increases which reveal January figures in the process. Wii rose 50% to 228k, 3DS 53% to 262k, and DS 76% to 135k. Thanks to Microsoft announcing a 42% share, this puts PS3 figures at around 347k - 360k.

Anita Frazier announced that hardware was up 62% over January, and 87% including the newly released PS Vita, this puts PS Vita sales in the 220k - 230k range.

Also in Nintendo's press release, they announced that Super Mario Galaxy is the ninth game to pass the 5 million mark in the US, and reiterated that the Wii has now reached an install base of 39 million. The race is still on between Wii and PS2, but with January and February seeing 50% drops year over year (already down 400k over 2011), it doesn't bode well for the remainder of the year. Despite being ahead on an aligned launch scale, it's losing a lot of steam. 3 million in 2012 (which could turn out to be quite optimistic given the trend so far this year) that puts Wii a good 5.5m behind the PS2, with very little life left in it going into 2013 with a successor on the market.

I think it's doing really well. it's just that the 360 and PS3 are in sales overdrive in America at the moment. Things should die down come announcements at E3.

LEt's be honest, other than MK and SM3D, not much software happening. In Japan a new game is released each week. The west needs more support

I think the 3DS sales are very good, and that without new games. Even more than the Vita in its launch month!

MW3 constantly dominating. The PS3 is not doing bad.
