One Piece Pirate Musou First Day Shipments Reach 650,000 in Japan - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 March 2012 / 6,186 Views

One Piece Pirate Musou (PS3) has launched in Japan and according to Namco Bandai first day shipments reached 650,000 units. This a new record for the One Piece franchise and would make it one of the biggest launches in Japan for the PlayStation 3 and the biggest launch in 2012 to date.

Expect first week sales to be similar to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) which opened up with 480,695 units sold. This would put the game above Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) which sold 424,737 in its opening week and only below Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) and Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) which sold 1,464,964 and 538,774, respectively.

One Piece is the most popular anime and manga in Japan. Last year it sold 37 million volumes while Naruto only sold 6 million.

Good for the fans of the series, good for Namco and Sony as well :)
Hope the special console package sells well.

good...so Namco got enough money to localize it ;-)

Localization is cheap contrary to what most gamers think, a lot of small PC games get localized (subbed but also dubbed!), but on consoles that's rare because devs are lazy and think "occidentals understand English well enough, why bother", that's a shame...

Could beat XIII-2 opening if sell-through is strong. PS3 hw will be also interesting as there is that special bundle.

I really wish they would give us the breakdown on the numbers for each version (Standard, Treasure Box, PS3 bundle).

A lot of Japanese animes may not be real stories, but beautiful for sure, one piece for one, persona is good too,but some stories are boring and dumb too although.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. I imagine like most games in Japan that launch with over 300K sales it will be extrememly front loaded. Monster Hunter and Pokemon being the main exceptions.

when i first saw this game i was hyped like no other, but the general consensus of the reviews on the Japanese Amazon site is that this game BLOWS. They basically used the One Piece brand name and made a shitty game. It's filled with QTE's and they basically made a mess of a game. I'm no longer getting this game and very disappointed with Koei/Tecmo/W-force/etc.
