The biggest problem is the series has no direction. There have been like 9 major console releases and the story hasn't really gone anywhere since AC3 (the 5th release).

Fans are losing interest for numerous reasons. Too many releases in a relatively short period, repetitive gameplay, some releases are small improvements to the predecessor, some releases have been mediocre, and as I mentioned before the story lacks direction.

This game has probably sold over 4 million units with digital included, the series still has a following. But they need to do something significant to bring more long time fans back.

Sales have never been that big for the 'inbetween' AC games though. Wait till they stick a '5' after the title, that's bumps a couple mill right there.
