@ radha

Why are Xbox360 JRPGs flopping hard? Which one sold on PS3 better? The well hyped White Knight Chronicles just sold~340.000 in Japan. If you now consider, that we have around 3.000.000 PS3´s in Japan, and just around 1.000.000 Xbox360s i dont see Star Ocean 4 "flopping hard".

Also dont forget that the best selling JRPG is available on Xbox360, Lost Odyssey.

@G- I played tales of vesperia, it was far to anime-ish and the battle system was a boring rip-off of till the end of time.

The story was okay i guess, but the characters were AWFUL, i'll remember characters from Enchanted Arms over ToV.

So yes i have played ToV, and SO4 is far better in every way in my opinion.

But dont mind me, i never liked tales games ever since Legendia so its only natural for me to loath them all afterwards.

With current Trends it should outsell Blue Dragon in the long run, and compete with LO sales. Lost Odyssey is still the "king" of JRPG sales since the rest are WRPGs... till Final Fantasy comes out.

im 30 hrs in after giving it the benefit of the doubt. some interesting parts kept me playing, but after i sensed the totality of the entire game, i realized its just a really long episode of a really bad power ranger show. and just as annoying. ToV dealt with mature issues like friendship, racism, lloyalty, hope, and the classic good vs evil. it was one of the most moving rpgs since FF VIII. This game just sux!

Not as consistnently polished as ToV but still a great game. Hopefully it slow burns it's way to good sales like Lost Odyssey.

290k in 2 weeks is not bad, but not great either for Star Ocean. Big drop in sales comes from Japan due to being a 360 exlusive. I wonder how it will fare in NA compared to SO3 and I wonder if the big releases of these weeks had any impact on it.

If it was not for ToV releasing in japan first and helping sell out Xbox 360 across Japan Star Ocean would not have sold as much as it did. At the time ToV was released in japan around 600k Xbox 360 were sold in japan. Star Ocean got released when there is now 900k Xbox 360 sold. I think you get the differents.

Its funny how the IP excuse seems to work in every way

SO4 sold well - Buh buh teh IP!

SO4 outsells ToV - LULZ lets forget the dozens of Tales games, because now SO is actually bigger!

Blue Dragon sold well - Buh buh teh Sakaguchi

Blue Dragon flops on DS - LULZ teh new IP!

TLR sold well in Japan - Umm...

Its funny how you claim to be so 'fair-minded' when in fact you are cherry picking. This game has blown the lid on ToV, Blue Dragon was the game that made people remember that the 360 even existed and not forgetting, THE IMMENSE marketing it got.

Truth is this has sold well, and the proof is there, but offcourse, denial will come in on all fronts.

By the software that you compare, as for the software of PS3, "White Knight Chronicles" is big IP (this includes a development cost and the advertising cost). In addition, "Disgaea 3" and "Valkyria Chronicles" are not categories of the RPGs in Japan.
However, all 360 software of the comparison is big IP (this includes a development cost and the advertising cost). This is meaningless.
Let's compare it by the same software released for the same period.

Well andrew, all I have to say is that Square Enix did not abandon Sony like you say. Final Fantasy Versus 13 proves that SE hasn't really abandoned Sony and left them out of the cold just yet. What about FF7:CC and FF:Dis - fighting game? Maybe Sony was just being smarter with what's being released for their console. But, most likely Microsoft is just paying SE to release JRPG's for their console first and then porting it to the PS3 later. Star Ocean 4 and the Last Remnant will most likely go to the PS3 with added content to make up for the timed exclusivity. Don't even argue about that, because the developers said that either of the 2 may or may not become multi-platform, but they DID not say that the 2 wouldn't. With that in mind, I can almost guarantee that once FF13:versus comes out, it's going to wipe all those games you listed off the map.

Not for nothing, but 220k is hardly something to brag about when Blue Dragon, which was a brand new IP on a smaller userbase at the time sells equal and/or better than Tri-ace's flagship title.

TLR is overtracked, but whatever, its sold well, especially in Japan.

Regardless, this week SO4 sold roughly 5k, its now at 190k solid.

The thing is, i bet if it had better 'legs' and sold less, the fanboys wouldnt be whining, but whatever. Either way, the game has sold really well in Japan, and is going to get to 200k easy, if not 220k. That is fantastic, even ToV couldnt do that

Thats the funny thing, fanboys call this a failure yet forget how ToV did, it sold well and yet is a bigger IP (fanboys will deny this too)

The game has just started in NA, who knows how its going to sell over time? Both IU and TLR had weak openings and went onto do quite well.

andrew - nice comparison there.... NOT.

TLR - not at 600k SE's reports prove that.

BD - heavily bundled in japan (shouldnt effect the total too much but it should be notted)

disgea3 a very very niche game selling close to ToV a main story tales game? thats poor sales for tales.

did you expect demons soul to do well in japan? i think you should reconsider that.

as for VC that game sold 150k more than disgea 3. obviously very successful for that type of game.

only successful game you show is LO and WKC already is more than a third of its sales with only on small region. now i dont believe so4 would have done 450k first week in japan alone but looking at yakuza 3 resident evil 5 im sure it could of more than doubled its first weeks sales.

I also forgot to mention that JRPGs sold more in japan than america last generation. This generation, they just aren't selling well in Japan, unless they are on a handheld. America is the country buying these games, so the 360 is the logical choice for the platform.

If this game was on PS3 it would sell at least 450k 1st week in Japan and 40k in US. Also in others PS3 games always sellng more than X360 ver except shooter. Square Enix, you made a wrong decision for making SO4 X360 exclusive. Better if they made it multiplat."

What crack are you smoking. The PS3's rpg sales are rather pathetic.

Disgaea 3 = 210k (without europe)
White Knight Chronicles = 340k (only japan)
Valkyria Chronicles = 360k (which is a shame cause it's a damn good game).
Demon Soul's = 80k (only japan)

Now...for comparison, let's look at 360 sales.

Star Ocean only had 40k less sales in it's opening week (in Japan) compared to White Knight Chronicles. They actually ran out of stock for Star Ocean in Japan, and the ps3 has a bigger user base (by 2 million users). Don't think that translates to well when it's only a difference of 40k.

Last Remnant = 600k
Tales of Vesperia = 290k (no europe)
Infinite Undiscovery = 470k
Blue Dragon = 620k
Lost Odyssey = 910k

And eternal sonata sold more on the 360 than ps3.

Not only does the 360 have more JRPGs, they also have better sales with their JRPGs. Star Ocean should surpass Last Remnants sales over time, so getting close to 1 million isn't out the question. Sure Star Ocean 3 sold more, but considering the size of the PS2 base against the 360 base, 1 million for the Last Hope is great.

PS3 fanboys need to stop crying cause sony dropped the ball this generation. The japanese developers abandoned sony for a reason, and the sales figures don't lie.

One more note, most JRPGs on the ps2 didn't reach 1 million, so you can't really call blue dragon, Last Remnant, Tales of Vesperia, or Eternal Sonata failures. They sold what they should've. And in some cases (Last Remnant), they are selling better than they should be.

i really didnt see any microsoft support for this game, why dont microsoft realize that they lost last gen console wars for not having JRPG's ?
Microsoft is really stupid beyond words sometimes.

@tyePhoid

Eternal Sonata was apparently a bad game with many 360 onwers warning us PS3 users from getting it

there were several threads about it

but SO4 is awesome,.....thats all we are hearing.

Im a pretty new xbox 360 owner, and this was the reason i got one in the first place even if it does come to PS3 later i dont care in the mean time i can play this and some of the 360's exclusives to.

Gotta say though, Star Ocean: TLH is/isnt what i expected it to be, very much a mixed bag of awesome-sauce with a funny after-taste.

So far though, im about 3 hours in to the game, and already i can tell this is the Best JRPG of the current generaion of consoles hands down.

Although im also playing Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 aswell and its reeally good to.

Overall at this point in time, its better to own both HD consoles to get the best of both worlds when it comes to JRPG's and Exclusive games.

Im depressed because I know its going to end soon. Its so awesome....

If I had to choose between a Tales of Vesperia 2 and a Star ocean: TLH 2....

I'd probably commit suicide and hope they make both. Then, I'n the year 3000 when they can bring me back to life I'll demand copies of both :P
