According to Sega the title has hit 5 million on Wii & DS combined in just 3 months already. And seeing how this title keeps topping the charts I'm suspecting we are undertracking this game alot on this site.

http://www.n-europe.com/news.php?nid=11580

I can't believe Sega overshipped this title with over 1 million copies. Reality must be that VGChartz is undertracking both versions. Probably most of it in Others and the DS version in particular.

Actually a majority of Sega's games last year were pretty damn good. Medieval 2 Kingdoms, Football Manager 2008, Crush, Bleach Blade of Fate, Virtua Tennis 3, Virtua Fighter 5 (and VF5 Online) were all highly rated, while Sega Rally Revo, Sonic and the Secret Rings, AfterBurner, Bleach Shattered Blade, Mario and Sonic and a couple of others were average. Actually, I can only think of three truly crappy games released last year, and one of them was a port of a 2006 X360 title.

The producer said that she considered the series done. She had the ending she wanted, and I think thats its good that they haven't made six or seven new installments. As for PSO, that's a cheap ripoff by Sonic Team, where they essentially used the brand name to sell the product.

I'm really glad to see this game sell well for SEGA. Recently many of their games have been garbage, yet they still have a lot of interesting IP's to leverage and with a winner every here and now hopefully they can stay afloat until they make a decent game.

As far as Phantasy Star goes, hopefully they bring the whole shebang to VC and screw what they said for being done with the series, that was over 10 years ago, they didnt seem over it when they made the 3 PSOnline games. Lets hope that someone somewhere in that company gets a light bulb over their head and somehow brings a kickass PS V to fruition. Probably a better chance that all Earthlings will immediately start falling in love with George Bush, but hey, a guy can dream cant he? (about PS not GWB).

There won't be a Phantasy Star V, as the producers stated in 94-95 that they were done with the series.

EdEN posted 27/02/2008, 07:53
The amounts come from SEGA itself, VGchartz and a 3-6% adjustment to VGchartz numbers to account for untracked retailers and market adjustment. All in all SEGA has done wonderfully on the Wii. Hopefully Skies of Arcadia 2 and Phantasy Star V (proper) aren't too far behind.

Obviously the numbers have changed by now since GS, M & S at the Olympics and Nights continue to sell at a moderate, extraordinary and reasonable rate respectively.

3.4 million and counting. I see this game getting a "re-release" a month before the actual olympics... maybe with a different cover or a special distinctive that marks it as "4 times platinum selling beijing olympics official game" and selling AT LEAST another 1.5 million by December 31st, 2008. SEGA must be LOVING their support for the Wii right now:

Worldwide (approximate) sales for SEGA games on Wii.

a) Alien Syndrome: 85k

b) Bleach: Shattered Blade: 350k

c) Sonic and the Secret Rings: 900k

d) Nights: 210k

e) Ghost Squad: 300k

f) The Golden Compass: 360k

g) Jissen Pachi-Slot Pachinko Hisshôhô! Hokuto no Ken: 25k

h) Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity: 200k

i) Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz: 600k

j) Mario and Sonic at the Olympics: 3.4 million

Total (approximate) units of SEGA software sold on Wii: 6.44 million

Don't get carried away. Ioi's numbers for European software are always the most speculative, and the American software numbers are often very different from the NPDs. Unless Nintendo (or Sega?) had some sales updates in their fiscal reports. Then I'd retract my statement.

Considering demand has nowhere neer been met, and the olympics will obviously push the titles numbers again 4 million should easily be reached.

Well, actually Joemanji, if you add up totals for things like Crazy Taxi, Sonic Heroes and Mega Collection, it'd be around No 6 or 7.

And take into account that alot of titles from Sega still don't have all the numbers finished yet. Not they have any more games that've sold 4 million, but they do have more world wide sellers than those listed. Lack of Euro numbers on alot of titles (SMB BB) is rather annoying. Lack of both American and Euro numbers on Saturn games is even worse.

I am glad this game is doing well. I was a little disappointed by the initial reviews but now I realize that most specialized reviewers have no idea how to review a casual game. Mario & Sonic is great for the same reasons as Wii Sports or Carnival games. Casual players get it because they already know the rules and thus know how to play it. The actual game could have better graphics and the rowing competition is actually poorly designed but overall is an excellent title and the best multiplayer game I currently own.

The numbers look weird, but for most of us this is the first holiday season we're following closely with accurate numbers. I guess this is what the end-of-year shopping frenzy is supposed to look like.

Nice to have more third party millions sellers on the Wii, even though I'm not convinced if this one is any good.

This game started off bit slow, but it's getting some really good sales every week now. I had my doubts about it hitting a million so soon with it's sales, but the sale numbers have shot right up. It will definitely get to a million now.

Glad to see Sega seeing some profits from this game; I don't get why people say this game is rubbish; while not stellar, it's very good fun with 4 people (It doesn't try to offer incredible depth or epic single player, it's just shallow fun)

The 'others' sales graph is exponential, therefore this game will sell an infinite amount of copies lifetime.

Based on sales so far this is definitely a million seller. Good legs and olympic hype could push it to two million, and nobody is sure if the 4 million figure from Sega included the DS version.

Still haven't played it, but I don't think I'm going to like it. Minigames, sports, and the post-Megadrive Sonic characters are all major turn-offs for me.

This game gets many advertisement in TV here in germany. One of the biggest TV-channels here (RTL) has this game declared as it's 'game of the week'. Sega invests some money into getting good numbers. A question: Is Sega making it's 4 million sales-forecast for this game alone or including the DS-version (http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=7708)?

@MontanaHatchet: So quiet recently. This game sells incredibly in europe. And the numbers are increasing.

on the topic of sales. This game will cruise past 1 million with absolute ease. Will be there before the year is up. I predict this game will be past 2 million by the time the Olympics hits, and anything could happen at that point...

4 million is a definite possibility, but Sega need to play their cards right, and get some good advertising done at the Olympics.

I think most publishers would love to see the sales this game has gotten so far. I wouldn't write it off yet, this game appears to have legs. Also, you have to remember that people outside of the "game world" don't read reviews of games. They buy a game because it interests them by either word of mouth or by going to the store and looking at boxes. People my age who don't follow the reviews etc. will see Mario Vs. Sonic, think back to their youth and pick the game up. I think it's very possible that this game outsells Mario Party 8.

The game could do really well actually ... seeing that it had allready passed the 400k with the EU numbers , and that it has one strong holiday before it , and pretty low sales drop , if any , this game could reach 4 million lifetime :)

4m is not impossible at all... I'd even say the Wii version could reach a million by the end of this year. World wide sales were > 200.000 this week, and will likely remain in the 150.000 range until Christmas.
Maybe 1.5 - 2m lifetime. The DS version might sell even better because of the bigger userbase; let's say 2 - 2.5m lifetime. There you are :)

@ MMementh- the game is okay and is really fun if you have 3 other people! Relays especiallys. Single Player experience is kinda lame, and the vault is absolutely awful in this game (SO much better in the 2004 Athens olympic game for PS2-- lol ) and they could have had more gymnastics, but if you can get enough people, this game is a great buy!

M&S >>> MP8 (if that's says anything at all, lol)

I agree with Montanna that this game will hardly live up to Sega's expectations (I wonder if this game's falter has anything to do with Sega's recent prediction of the Wii comming in last this gen). It will be lucky to sell a million.

But yeah, Montanna, play it first, from Sega's expectations they put too much work into this to be just a cash in.

Oddly enough I would have been more surprised if the game did sell well. I had little expectation for this title.

But have you actually played it?

A 69.3% would make it the best Olympics game ever I think.

Of course that's because every Olympics game till now has been 20 events where you had to either alternate pressing A and B or alternate pressing B and A.

I'll probably pick it up some time next year myself.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

6.0 from Gamespot-"Mario and Sonics' debut as a duo fails to earn them a spot on the medal stand."

7.9 from IGN:"Nintendo and SEGA host a mascot mash-up in this entertaining, surprisingly addictive ode to the Olympic games."

69.3% from Gamerankings

My verdict: Cheap cash in.
