.89m, totally crawling its way up there. Will reach a million this year.

--SPOILERS:

-------
Kaim is still immortal at the end of the game, he tells Sarah something like "lets try for another millennium".

I would totally be up for a Lost Odyssey sequel, I was sad when the game ended and I couldn't play anymore. I think it would be interesting to see how Jansen and Ming's marriage goes.

The game can have a sequel even if there's no reason for it from a story standpoint. A lot of JRPG series, like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales, etc. have games that take place in the same universe but have little relation to each other storywise.

Even if they wanted to connect them somehow it would be easy, since Kaim is immortal. (I think, it's been so long since I beat it, I forget if their immortality was taken from them at the end.) Set it a couple centuries in the future, and some new evil threat is around that brings him out of retirement.

SPOILERS

MLD: No, I don't think so. Maybe for Seth and Gongora though, since Seth pushed them back into their own world.. And I don't think they've ever shown or explained anything about their world.. So it might be possible for them to be allies in a second game, but I doubt it. Hopefully they just continue to use the name.

I'm also a big fan of xbox live arcade.... I'm really impressed with what they've done with the xbox arcade games on there.....

MS know this game is important, its one of the reasons why Japanese devs have much more confidence in the 360

Also, MS know they need every JRPG they can get, and given this sold well, i dont see any reason as to why they wont continue the franchise
Message | Report
kuddles posted 29/11/2008, 04:25
I hope MS sees this as a success. It's a non-Square-published JRPG on the most Western-based console, plus it received mixed reviews and not much of a marketing push and was released during the traditionally slowest month of game sales.

If Microsoft isn't satisfied with the results, even with everything going against this game, then I hope a different publisher picks this up, releases the original on PS3 and then funds LO2 to come out on both at the same time. Maybe then Microsoft will regret dropping the ball on this one.

@ Munkeh111

I'm not sure if South-East Asia is roped in there or not, because, in Singapore at least, I know LO has plenty of legs.

We got ours a bout a month before you guys, with English and the Japanese packaging (the most holy of possible combinations!)

As far as I know, when I bought mine AFTER it was already released in NA, I found out that the store was sold out to be left with 2 copies.

And this a month after our own local release. It was very heartening!

Plus the store-owner was playing it on his store console and HDTV at the entrance.

Btw, I do know that there quite a number of Russian fans for LO. One of my buddies is anyway, and he heads a JRPG forum site. Apparently the Russians kinda like Gongora, but I think it's because he's even more hilarious to them on some level...

Oh, and check out this French fansite (I found this from a DeviantArt post, the guy puts up his concept for the website): http://www.mistwalker.fr/

It's NOT official, it's a fansite. Real dedication to buy up a domain for a fansite!

Oemenia posted 07/06/2008, 07:18
Actually LO is VERY VERY VERY old school, so it was more Japanese. But yeah, MS need to ship units of 360 in Japan, as Japanese 360 owners are making a bigger dent on software sales, for a game like this, 100k is what could be needed to break even. Nobody says MS need millions of units there, but if its a sizeable amount that can contribute than its mission accomplished.

But yeah, BD made 360s move there, i dont know how on Earth they were silly enough not to do the same with this game, but fortunately it still managed to get 100k. As for marketing, i think it wasnt huge, youre right, and i dont ever remember seeing an ad here in the UK

@mrstickball
How would they market it better? A midnight launch? A Coca Cola commercial? An ad in Rolling Stones?

I agree, MS marketed LO better here than in Japan. This game was tailored towards western gamers rather than Japanese gamers. The sales number are good. They aren't Halo level but they are good enough to convince developers there is still an audience for turn based RPGs

Whoot! I finally am now an official owner of Lost Odyssey. I supported Mistwalker by buying a brand new copy :)

Can't wait to play this with my girlfriend.

And for reference: MS marketed Lost Odyssey "Well" but not insanely. MS didn't give a rats behind in Japan about marketing, but gave it the marketing in the US/PAL that it should of received. LO could of done more in NA/PAL with more marketing, but not much. JP could of been +100k or more if MS would of marketed it ala Blue Dragon.

It wasn't "hugely" marketed, exactly. It featured a commercial that ran fairly frequently and some in-store promotion but it's not like MS created a "blow-out" event. The commercial wasn't even a specifically-created commercial, simply FMV from the game. I'd say it was marketed like the average 1st party release. The marketing definitely helped boost interest in the game but I wouldn't say it was excessive.

@ MontanaHatchet

Actually Square didnt give a two toss about the XBOX brand last gen, with the 360, they already have a few exclusives out and planned for the system with Last Remnant being multiplat. Not forgetting Infinite Undiscovery which again, had they not though it would sell, they probably wouldve ported onto the PS3 as soon as they got the proper dev kits

XBOX had nothing, the 360 has something, that must mean at least a bit. As ive said, Namco were confident enough to develop a number of exclusives for the 360 due to the Japanese userbase there and their confidence in the NA and EU market to further keep those titles affloat.

In fact, Tales of Vesperia, the very reason why they are going ahead and keeping it 360 exclusive is simply because of the positive reaction they got out of Eternal Sonata (80k) but also BD (250k, though that had many promotions). Yeah its going to ported eventually, but if they felt the 360 userbase wasnt enough, they couldve just delayed the game and launched it simultaneously for PS3 as well. Luckily for Namco, Tales is the third biggest RPG franchise there, if they were satisfied with 80k, imagine for an established and popular franchise? The minimum we can expect from ToV is 100k units

And no, from the looks of it, Lost Odyssey seems like to have made a profit, Namco are predicting 500k for ToV to their investors, meaning that number will not only make them break even but also pull a profit. Given that LO is at 680k, still selling strongly, and the fact shipment numbers are normally around 200-400k ahead of consumer sales, they are well into profit.

Oemenia posted 28/05/2008, 02:12
Yes but MS have easily beaten the number of units of original XBOXs sold in Japan with the 360. Japanese 360 gamers are contributing more and more to software sales with up to 100k units for the most popular games as well as Japan/hardcore orientated ones

MS are going to continue to get titles that appeal to them, because Blue Dragon DID indeed give a the console a boost there. If they can establish say a million userbase there, thats a good achievement, because again, that million will make further contributions but also, the 600k current userbase was enough for the likes of Namco to support the console with exclusive titles.

This gen is going to go a long way, both Sony and MS cant afford to upgrade when they have taken so many losses. Japan may be a lost cause, but it doesnt mean its still an important region where some benefits can be gained

If Microsoft does the smart thing and does a marketing plan to that effect this christmas and gives this, Mass Effect, etc.. another push then this game will definetly sell a million this year.

Failing that this game will sell a million sometime next year very easily.

That will definetly be a huge feather in the 360's hat. The first next gen million selling RPG on their system.

I've always compared Star Ocean with The Tales series due too their similar battle system and I played both their originals on PSOne and I always considered Tales its better in every way. And Kingdom Hearts is kinda stupid I hate the corny action battle system. And I dont like the whole Disney aspect. @squall

The fact that you called that list mediocre already classifies you as a fanboy.

Let me start out by saying I'm sorry because I did forget about Mass Effect. That is a great game and I have to give 360 some props on that (go check the Mass Effect page I commented on it saying it's awesome), but Blue Dragon was TERRIBLE, Enchanted Arms was fun for 1 hour, and I never played Eternal Sonata, it just looked pretty dumb to me. Fable 2 looks like a great game as well, but Fable just got boring too quickly, it doesn't match up to Oblivion. There isn't too much info about Infinite Undiscovery (at least that I know of), so I can't comment on that, but if you have a link please show me... And by the way, I know God of war doesn't have RPG elements, I was just a little angry (and drunk) at what you were saying so I tried to expand my list. That was a little fanboyish so once again I apologize. Everything else on that list though is gonna own.

Also the new one button combat feature is looking good too. And Tales of Versperia is gonna be sweet. I've been a Tales fan since Tales of Destiny back on PSOne. I'm excited to see Namco put out the next installment of this great franchise on Xbox 360.

By which time of course the 360 will have more RPG's added on top. Personally I'm excited about fable 2. I wasn't hyped for the first one like everyone else so I really enjoyed it. I'll buy cry on and infinite undiscovery when they're released aswell. Hopefully they both make it this year. The ps3 is a great machine but from both a quality and quantity argument you cannot realistically say that the ps3 has better RPG's. Most fans arguments are for future releases, which you haven't even played, they could be crap for all you know. I'd rather play RPG's now and in the future.

@ gangster gamer save it man and the mediocre rpg list. ( mostly )
the new Tales game will be better then star ocean (ur best in ur words). always has been the better series.

and about god of war 3 being a rpg?! i dont even wanna comment on that nonsense. rpg elements...jeez that and a 100 other games, doesnt make them rpgs i guess Rainbow 6 vegas 2 is a rpg now too!?

and I will go there i still say 360 has more and better rpgs. and i only refer to titles coming out in 2008. i somehow doubt all those titles will be out in 2008.....FF 13 for starters. keep up the deep digging.

And who knows what 360 will have in store for rpg's for 2009. But they haven't failed so far between both wrpgs and jrpgs. fact is 360 owners dont have to look far to find good rpg's.

and looking at ur avatar makes me wonder... all 360's rpg's suck?? I dont think so. Mass Effect was a pretty good wrpg. Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata were good but not great. Hell even Enchanted Arms was pretty decent. I own and played them all and liked them all.

Did you play them all? You said they suck so you must have right? I somehow doubt you played one of them if any. lol let alone own a 360.
By looking at your games list I dont see one 360 game listed. So I have my doubts. But if you do own a 360 & played all those games then my apologies. But you might wanna update you games list as to make it more believable.

And imo I doubt any of those games on your list will be better then Lost Odyssey.

SO GOOD DAY TO YOU

I disagree with you're comments about 360 having better RPG's. I think you're forgetting some other rpgs coming to the PS3. There's of course FFXIII, and then there's Star Ocean 4 (which will be even better), Kingdom Hearts 3, White Knight Story, Disgea 3, Angel Love Online (Look it up, a free MMO for PS3), and God of War 3 (it has its RPG elements).

Don't even start to say 360 has better rpgs, it just has more (right now). Plus they all suck, Lost odyssey is the only good one, actually it's a great one, but it remains the only high quality one.

Good day to you.

@mukkeh11 But their's a difference the target audience for Wii is casual. And rpg's are directed at hardcore gamers. So I believe the Wii wouldn't see as many sales as you might think.

And Final Fantasy is legend we know this, but it's past it's time. I say that with respect but I dont see how any rpg gamer of a mature age cannot see Final Fantasy is going down hill.

If your expecting the Ultimate rpg when FF13 comes out I think you and many other people are gonna be disappointed.

Truth is when it comes to rpgs regardless of FF, Xbox 360 has the edge we got Lost Odyssey which is awesome and Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery will be out on the 360 this year too. Not mention wrpg like Fable 2 and Too Human. So I'm gonna have to disagree the choice to me is obvious which one is better.

Final Fantasy will only make a killing due to it's past glory. Both me and you will buy it cause we pray for the best. But after the last few FF I know better not to get my hopes up.

Aside from all that congrats to Lost Odyssey for hitting 600k.

Enjoyed this far more than Blue Dragon (i found the plot of Blue Dragon to childish).

Really got into the story, enjoyed the pace of the game and thought the battles stayed interesting.

Only slight issues I found is that sometimes the save points could have been spaced better and perhaps the final bosses could have been a bit harder - i thought the hardest boss in the game was one of the first!

It's great the 360 is getting some terrific variety.

Nearly hitting half a million, pretty solid sales and hopefully it will get lifetime sales of approaching 750k as the install base increases and word of mouth spreads.

I think the reason JPRGs are selling so-so on the 360 is mainly because the "mother" of all JRPGs isnt coming the platform.

Yeah I know how it sounds, but considering how that crowd behaves its kinda obvious that the fanbase of Final Fantasy is the largest JRPG fanbase of all.

If Kingdom Hearts which I personally doubt, were to come to the PS3 then it would be much worse for the 360 crowd.

I liked the game, but didn't really feel like finishing it. Maybe a sequel on XBone would make me finish it.

the reason why this didn't sell in Japan is because the girl to the right looks strange as hell

japs are very weird and if it isn't "cute" they will not buy
