Just saw a commercial for this game, months after its release. This kinda pisses me off because other Ubisoft Wii games haven't gotten anything.

@ pokeclaudel

I think that depends a lot on your values. This game is more social, since you don't have to share a dance pad. It's cheaper, because you don't need to buy a dance pad. It has less emphasis on scores and precision, so if you live for those full combos, this isn't the game for you.

Eurogamer have a positive (7/10) review that I think nails what makes it fun: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/just-dance-review?page=2

Coupled with the UK's propensity for the musical/cheesy/naff (Mamma Mia anyone?), it makes perfect sense to me why this is a hit.

As a game that appeals to a wide variety of people, it's a hit. It's fun, it's simple, and that is what a lot of people apparently want. Haven't you gotten it by now that Nintendo is trying to appeal to a wider audience than just serious gamers?

Just Dance is great, and a whole lot of fun when people come over for a party. If you don't like dancing or you don't like having fun, don't play it.

Another thing: for some reason, all the critic reviews are exceptionally low (like 2-4/10), but if you look at the customer reviews (check out amazon) for the game, they are all 5 stars. Just proving my point :)

Wait, should it be judged by something other than fun..?

If it's fun, if people are satisfied by it, then how is it "fundamentally terrible"?

ash3336 posted 23/01/2010, 04:38
Ubisoft advertises on the TV for this but not No More Heroes 2 and probably wont for Red Steel 2. Then whine on how the Wii market is not good for hardcore.

ash3336 posted 23/01/2010, 04:37
This shows that with the correct advertisement, even crap can sell. If good games on the Wii such as MadWorld, and No More Heroes 2, TvC and Conduit are/were properly advertised, Wii market would be substantially different.

Bahaha. I played this game tonight. It's the equivelant of putting a CD on and waving your arms around with a Wii remote in hand.

It's fun. I can see why it's successful. But as a game, it's fundamentally terrible.

People criticize the game's quality, but it does all it needs to for a dance game (it's almost like a port of an arcade hit). Read IGN's review, it's amusing (they gave it a 2.0) - everything they hate about it is every reason why it succeeds.

The game is accessible as they come, and it does away with failing songs and unlockables. It's got its own unique, appealing style. Some of these are things GH/RB or even Nintendo can learn from.

It is low on tracks / content, but I guess that's why it's budget priced. I doubt the game will stop selling any time soon, it really has no competition. Whether it was from pure luck or genius, Ubisoft has a big hit on their hands.

Girl power. About 50% of Wii owners are female and this game is obviously appealing to that market. Shame it isn't a better overall game though. Ubisoft could have had a mega-hit.

I have to say the ad campaigning here in the UK has been completely effective. My mum has never wanted any game as much as this. Their YouTube channel pretty much sealed the deal for her.

And y'know what? The game's not that bad. It's definitely dependent on the type of person playing. The more they put in, the more they get out. It's like a communal dance/exercise tape and that's no bad thing, so good for Ubisoft.

Oh and the £18 price point is just right and probable the driving factor in sales.

ubi is also planning a larger viral ad campaign after new years featuring people playing the game, some of the new ads are posted on the justdance youtube channel. the ad's aren't bad, i can see this having some good legs.
