Ok, go ahead and scratch my previous comment. The game doesn't really get any better when you get deeper in to it. There are some neat ideas in there, but the execution is always poor. Even if it's an old game I just can't let some things fly. Had to rate it low. I hope tri-Ace's other console JRPG's are a lot better than this one, namely Resonance of Fate.

There are so many impressive things about this game that people are completely overlooking.
There's pretty much NO LOADING...NONE. The only noticeable loading you'll experience comes before the cutscenes...And even then they're what 5 seconds at most?
The entire world is connected, you'll get a black screen when going from the plains to the dunes, for example, but that's all it is: a quick black transition screen. The first time I opened a door in the game, I expected my character to physically open the door and walk in while a black screen comes up to load the interior. Instead, the door just...opens and you can clearly see the inside of the building and just walk right in. Not only is the game real time in terms of battles, it's real-time in terms of everything else. It's like the first FULLY realtime rpg (just because of the lack of loading). Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

The first area in this game gives the wrong impression of the games quality (That is Squae Enix's fault). After you learn Item Creation and leave the first area this game is a top tier Square Enix Game, with awesome combat graphics and plot. Give it a chance and you won't be sorry.

Yeah, this game is incredibly average. It's one of the few games where i have little will to do the sidequests because they're so mundane.

The Battle System is pretty fun, but almost everything else ranges from bad - average. The story is ok, but the characters are completely devoid of any charisma or development.

Although, I think the music is good and the graphics have some nice moments. Installing it to the HD really helped with the slow-down and framerate issues, nearly nullifying them.

This game is selling well. It wasn't hyped (like Too Human) and it's already turned a profit. Half a million is in the realm of possibilities for this title, which is better than Microsoft and Square expected it to sell.

Now...how well will Star Ocean sell? If it only sells 500k, then that will be a flop for such a great franchise.

Got the game as part of the Amazon deal - picked up IU and TLR for $50 total.

I started playing IU first, and I must say that I'm sadly dissapointed in it so far.

The lip synching is atrocious in the NA version, decent bits of slowdown for big battles, and just feels unpolished. Very dissapointed in it.

But it has good points too - the 'creation' system is very awesome, and the actual gameplay isn't half bad.

If I was writing a review (after about 7hrs), I'd give this game a 7.5 based on my current experiences - Better than Enchanted Arms (less generic), but not as good as Eternal Sonata (certainly not as polished).

Methinks that TLR will be a more satisfying experience.

I'm not a huge gamer when it comes to wasting hours and hours on a game every day. I have a busy life with a full-time job working 45+ hours a week, a wife that obviously requires a good deal of attention, and a variety of other things that require time. I don't need a thousand RPGs that take an eternity to play. I haven't even STARTED Lost Odyssey because I have a ton of other games for my 360 that I'm nowhere near beating (as well as some DS and Wii titles I'm still working on). Thus said, I'm fine with a shorter RPG. =p

nomorehalo posted 28/11/2008, 05:06
@tao -I actually want shorter RPG's. I been playing LO for over 3 months and am only on the 3rd Disc (though enjoying it), mostly because I'm in college. The game could be severly edited though as many of its cut-scenes and a few of the dungeons are dreadfully boring and worthless. I haven't played IU, but its length actually intrigues me as I may even beat this twice.

@Egghead

why would good sales for this game be good news? Its a half baked game that should've been in production a lot longer.

supporting games like this instead of Lost Odyssey for example, is a really bad thing to do. Because we'll get more half baked super short jRPGs. And I'm getting fed up with those!

If this goes on the PS2 will stay the jRPG king for years to come. Which is pretty ridiculous imo.

410k shipped, thats good news. SE overstuffed the supply, but it hardly matters, theyll probably ship another 50k copies worldwide after this batch. Hopefully Japan gets a discounted release some time in the future too

Also, tri-Ace developed their own engine, so its an investment, and an investment that Microsoft paid for = P

All in all, the game was a success, giving tri-Ace a new engine, MS a boost in NA and SE some extra pocket change

Good signs

Persona 3 had fanboy clout behind it since it's a long running series.

Also Persona 3 is a sequal that had prior release and feedback to iron out problems.

This game doesn't have either of those thing going for it.

No if a sequal to this is made, that's what to watch out for. That could be really good.

Arsenal009:
Once again, sorry, this IP is owned by Microsoft. They funded the development of the engine for this and Star Ocean as well so both games have a pretty low chance of being released on PS3.

Persona 3 was also low budget but that didn't stop the game from being a gem. Budget doesn't determine the quality of the game, just the quality of the production values. Quality of the game is determined by the polish and how well(or poorly) made the game is.

This isn't a big budget AAA title like GTA 4, Spore, MGS 4, or Final Fantasy. This game probably didn't cost a quarter of what those games did to make.

I think this is pretty in line with sales expectations. 200k is very good for a new franchise without any fanboy clout behind it.
