Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Scarlett Will Prioritize Frame Rate Over Graphics

Do you prefer 60/4k with reduced visuals or 30/4k with increased visuals?

YES! 30 40.00%

No. 5 6.67%

Depends on the game. 32 42.67%

I dont care. 8 10.67%

Total:75

Seems like the Scarlett's focus is going to be focused around framerate first and visuals 2nd. Now this is a bit of a "yes and no" Personally I think games like Halo 5 doesn't need to run at 60 frames in the campaign mode as long as the Multiplayer mode is 60 frames, I believe hitting rock solid 30 frame SP mode will add more value because the system will be able to do more things rather than push out a constant 60 frames and restricting enemy counts and big gorgeous scenes in the story mode.. Could be 60 frames might also run better for streamers and help with input lag etc however I am not entirely too sure.

Phil Spence recently said,

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/xbox-scarlett-is-prioritising-frame-rate-over-graphics-says-spencer/

“I think the area that we really want to focus on next generation is frame rate and playability of the games,” he said. “Ensuring that the games load incredibly fast, ensuring that the game is running at the highest frame rate possible.

“We’re also the Windows company, so we see the work that goes on [for] PC and the work that developers are doing. People love 60 frames-per-second games, so getting games to run at 4K 60 [FPS] I think will be a real design goal for us.”

“The thing that’s interesting is, this generation, we’ve really focused on 4K visuals and how we bring both movies through 4K Blu-ray and video streaming, and with Xbox One X allowing games to run at 4K visuals will make really strong visual enhancements next generation,” Spencer said.

“But playability is probably the bigger focus for us this generation. How fast do [games] load? Do I feel like I can get into the game as fast as possible and while it’s playing? How does it feel? Does this game both look and feel like no other game that I’ve seen? That’s our target.”

It would be a good move however for me, its not entirely necessary and it comes down to the games themselves, weather they need to operate at 60 frames all the time or not.

I definitely prefer this approach. However Microsoft can't/won't be able to dictate this to developers. Hopefully at least their own first party studios will target 60fps instead of graphics, but I expect consoles will yet again have a 30fps majority while developers chase resolution and intensive graphical effects.

I want games to look and feel like block buster movies at theaters, and not like soap operas. When my TV is set to higher fps things I watch look weird and overly fluid, taking away from the epicness of it all. Graphics over frame rate for all the RPGs, frame rate for sports games.

60/4k reduced visuals for most games, especially shooters like Halo & Gears. Both campaign & multiplayer.

Some 3rd person adventure games could be ok in 30fps.

I also prefer frame rates, I believe it's up to the developer. Sony first party studios for example will always focus on visuals over frames.

You should do some reading on the soap opera effect.  Your understanding of it seems a little off.  Its not a factor for video games, unless your TV is doing something really weird.

Frame rate, generally speaking, is more important to me than resolution. But, other graphical things are also important. So, the question is hard to answer as asked.

With that said, I certainly feel like a relative increase in the focus on frame rates would be a good thing for gaming.

That's a good one.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

4k is terms of resolution is so overrated. Unless one has a massive screen or sits incredibly close, 1080p is fine. What is important is HDR, not the actual pixel count. As far as I'm concerned:

1440p + HDR + 60 fps

Yeah no. While next gen hardware will definitely have better cpus compared to last gen. Helping with better frame rates. Its really the devs decision what to prioritize. The hardware cant force them to focus more on frame rate than graphics
