Some games combine genres. Sometimes it works perfectly and the two sides work in perfect harmony. Other times it can be a bit lopsided where a game is good in terms of one genre but bad in terms of another.
For example, Resident Evil 5 is a pretty good third person action shooter but most would probably agree it is a poor survival horror game. I think Murumasa the Demon Blade is an awesome 2D hack'n'slash but its action RPG elements are weak. Asura's Wrath was a cool action game but a repetitive scrolling shooter.
