I always thought that it was a first party game developed by a third party studio and funded by Nintendo, much like W101. Is that not the case?

I want a The Last Story sequel, but would that be Nintendo exclusive, or could that be on other platforms?

Isnt it a 2nd party game?

Edit - To expand;

Funded and published by the platform holder, yet developed by a 3rd party developer. Nintendo own the IP, they just funded another developer to take control.

Mistwalker can do whatever they want with the The Last Story IP.

The Last Story 2. Sounds like a great title for a videogame.
