Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why did Sony go with Super Smash Bros. too instead of Super Mario Bros. too?

Tagged games:

It's common knowledge that Super Mario Bros. is vastly more popular than Super Smash Bros.

So, why did Sony decided to make their own version of Smash but not Mario?

It seems easier to make a platformer, too, since you don't need to juggle with characters balancing.

p.s. Sony even got their own version of Mario Kart.

its because Sony has a superior 2D platforming game, its called littlebigplanet

Edit : for people who thought this was my own personal opinion

metacritic scores

littlebigplanet 95 > 89 super mario bros DS

Littlebigplanet 2 91 > 87 super mario bros Wii

Littlebigplanet vita 88 > 78 super mario bros 2 3DS

Have you played Battle Royale? Clearly, character balancing was not one of Sony's concerns.

Because Smash isn't an E-rated game like 2D Mario. No PS3 owner would buy such a kiddie game. Oh wait...

Sony has Littlebigplanet and they even had a superior clone of Mario Kart called Crash Team Racing.

it does ok but it's hardly record breaking...esp when compared to it's...ahem...source of inspiration.

I would like to see a platformer with less floaty jumps and more similar to Mario. Mario and LBP are enjoyable in two different ways.
