The first-ever Mexican MTV Game Awards took place last night, and it was a curious event for all concerned. Call of Duty: Black Ops understandably took home the most prizes - including "Best Latino Participation in a Game" - but it was KillZone 3 that won the special "Game of the Year" award.

More than 375,000 gamers voted for their favourite nominees, in categories such as "Best Game for Sharing Your World" and "Best Game for Pulling the Trigger" - two awards that almost seem written specifically for the winners. Naturally, the accolades went to LittleBigPlanet 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops respectively.

Football is just as important to Mexican gamers as first person shooters, and that was no better proven than FIFA 11's hilariously dubious win in the "Classic of Classics" category. Linkin Park's "Blackout", which featured in EA's footy sim, grabbed the gong for "Best Song in a Game," proving that someone out there has no ears.

PlayStation Move title Sports Champions came out top in the "Best Game to Shake Your Body To" category, and footballer Lionel Messi was shown to have explosive feet as his performance in Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 won him "Best Weapon of Mass Destruction." For real? Three-year-old Aaron Martinez Rivera was voted the "Most Unexpected Player" in a category sponsored by Sony PlayStation.

We're not one to argue about the voting standards of the MTV Game Awards (hell, look at what some of us back at home vote for in the Golden Joystick Awards). But surely Mexican gamers can't have that much of a sheltered life to vote for KillZone 3 as the best game of the year. Maybe we're just old fuddy-duddies.

The full list of winners is below - let us know what you think. We're still laughing.

Game of the Year: KillZone 3
Best Game for Sharing Your World: Little Big Planet 2
Best Game to Shake Your Body To: Sports Champions
Best Rivalry: Scorpion vs Sub-Zero, Mortal Kombat
Best Latino Participation in a Game: Danny Trejo, Call of Duty: Black Ops
Best Song in a Game: Blackout by Linkin Park, FIFA 11
Classic of Classics: FIFA 11
Most Realistic Game: Call of Duty: Black Ops
Best Game for Pulling the Trigger: Call of Duty: Black Ops
Most Anticipated Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Best Weapon of Mass Destruction: Lionel Messi, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011
PlayStation Most Unexpected Player Award: Aaron Martinez Rivera, Mexico - 3 years old
Legend Award: Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka, Pro Evolution Soccer creator

I'm not shocked at all lol. It's a good choice, KZ3 was a great game, amazing story and multiplayer. Don't see why it wouldn't get at least 1 goty award.

Fair enough ^^

this list excluded more recent games that came out this year, hence why modern warfare 3 won most anticipated. I would be willing to bet arkham city, uncharted 3, skyrim, etc. weren't even considered since they came out at the later half of the year.

So basically its only real competition was littlebigplanet 2 and portal 2, so its not so ridiculous it won.

I'm more surprised at many places categories.

It seems they just make up categories in order for some game to win.

What happened to the generic categories, You know, best platformer, best adventure, best rpg, best shooter, best multiplayer, best ect.

What the hell is this best trigger, best mass destruction weapon, a playstation specific award, ect.

I see lots of crap on many sites lists. I swear they look at their biggest contributers for the year and then go, "ok, how can we make one of their games win an award this year" "oh i see, lets create a best game that had a monkey that rides a car award" GENIUS. no other competiters, but who cares,

No Gears of War3......QUE?

Well, these awards are dubious.

Clarifying some things:
-The awards took place in October but they broadcasted them later.
-The awards are sponsored by Sony
