So I heard there was a leak of a preview build for the news DE out in the wild. So I put on my detective hat and hunted that thing down. My surprise is palpable. It's actually a bit unfinished, obviously, with the graphics and there are a few bugs here and there, but it had around 9-15 hours of gameplay in it. It was also absolutely fucking amazing. The health regen isn't even so bad because you get killed in 3-4 shots anyhow. Cover is optional, the 360-degree-kill-everything is stupid expensive to actually use, and I will tell you that I found a ridiculous amount of unfound game when I went through it a second time. The stealth system works, and unlike what unskilled scrubs and chobs will tell you on the official forums, sodoes the shooting route and you even have a ton of ammo to spare (consolse scrubs, look elsewhere for your shooting needs because you will run out of ammo quick if you aren't careful). This is honest to god the closest thing I have played to DE1, and even in an unfinished, buggy (it has less bugs than some full released games) state it is probably the best gaming I've had in many years (that includes Portal 2 solely because Portal 2 was so damn short). Hacking is actually a game, and it is interesting and the story has the potential of being good.

Now the most glaring problems came form the AI. It was good and all, it'd flank and everything, sometimes, however the moment you disappeared and they had to look for you, they became the dumbest fucking idiots in a game imaginable. Hopefully that is fixed up by the time of release 2 months from now. The other problem I have are the augmentations, which are all apparent from the get-go and they feel kind of simpler than they did back in DE1.

Overall this is simply awesome. If you want more details there are plenty of discussoins in the official forums, and around the last 20+ pages of The Hive thread they have are solely about this. This is the first game I have actually pre-ordered since sometime in '07.

P.S. Apparently you can't just run up to a proximity mine and disar mit this time around.

P.P.S. Yes the leak is solely on the PC, but since it is locked on lowest settings I am running it with half a core, and 10% of my video card, so worse PCs might be able to handle it as well. I am not even exaggerating.

OMG Vlad actually LIKES a game!!!

How is the soundtrack?

I know, in a time when a new game has 96% chance of being some hyped shit, I was genuinely surprised too. This year has been kinda nice, with Portal 2 (as costly as that was), Witcher 2 (as shitty as those controls were) and now Deus Ex (eventhough it's not even a full release...).

I can only describe it as fitting. Only once did it bug out and decide to stay on the "i have been seen and/or getting shot" track for a bit after I had disappeared from the guards' view, but otherwise it must fit well because I don't get distracted by it. There is one track that is really fitting for Jensen's apartment.

My only worry now is that DE2 will be too short, or that the story will continue on the way it looks liek it willa nd won't follow DE1's example.

cool because the trailers had amazing music.

A bit worried by your story comment though.....I was hoping this would be a MGS level game story quality wise!

I actually hope not cause I found MGS4's story utterly laughable. Not that DE1's story wasn't crappy, but it was deffinitely better. Also, when I was playing DE1 I thuoght the story would be much shorter than it ended up being, so I hope the same is true for this one.

I forgot to mention the cover system. It works but you don't have to use it often if you don't want to. There were several of the weird cases where I would be noticed while crouched by a wall but wouldn't be if I was inching while covered. The controls are kind of awkward at the start, but once you get use to them they kind of make sense for it as well. I'm still just glad you die in like 4 hits (you get insta killed if you get hit in the head without armor, or it hurts super hard if you do) so the regenerating thing isn't that big of a deal.

what you mean the game is good again, some of the stuff I was hearing like pre rendered video sequences that ended up being jarring and rough controls made me cancel my pre order

I don't know what you mean by jarring pre-rendered sequences, but there are some pre-rendered short cinematics here and there. he controls work fine too and just the little quirk with the cover gets annoying, but it kind of makes sense after you realize why cover isn't a toggle but a press and hold mechanic. I know that there used to be a selection wheel or something for items, but now you jsut have 1-0 and you can assign them to any item in the inventory. Also F1-4 handle the few activated augmentations. Other than that everythign else is standard first person controls.

hmm I read a preview a while ago that said the pre rendered cut scenes felt out of place and broke the flow of gameplay a bit, it also tels me that there probably isn't a lot of choice in how the story plays out if they pre rendered key moments with fixed outcomes but that might just be me and they actually di tones of them...

Glade to hear the controls actually work well in practic, maybe the preview I read was played on the console version, I guess I should think about re preordering it some time.

That is true, the cutscenes only seem to come on during main quests (obviously). There was actualyl a stretch of like 4 hours where I didn't see a single one because I was too busy doing other stuff in Detroit.

As for controls maybe you shoudl try this out. It can't even be called piracy, and the topic is completely open and monitored on the game's forums. It is actually a really great demo for the PC version, although still unfinished (some of the bugs are kind of weird too).
