Sony Not Hearing Complaints from Customers About Limited PS5 Storage - News

The PlayStation 5 comes with an 825 GB SSD, however, about 664 GB of it is available for installing games and apps. The rest of the SSD space is taken up by the operating system and other functionalities.

While not every game takes up a huge amount of space, some of the more popular titles, like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, requires more than 100 GB of storage space. This could lead to some PS5 owners in the future needing to delete games off the SSD to have enough room to install the next game they want to play.

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with The Telegraph has said he hasn't heard any complaints from customers about the available storage on the console.

"We’re not hearing that," Ryan said when asked if he had heard complaints from customers about the storage space on the PS5.  "We’ll obviously watch what happens as people unbox their PlayStations and start to use them. We think we’ll be okay.

"We obviously are able to monitor hard drive usage on the PS4 microscopically and everything that we saw there indicates that we should be fine."

Some games on the PS5 do offer ways to save storage space by having the ability to install just parts of a game like the multiplayer, while not needing to install the campaign.

in the future, PS5 owners will be able to expand their storage with an internal SSD that is Sony-certified. However, at least for now an SSD that meets the PS5 specifications won't be cheap.

The PlayStation 5 is available in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, and will launch in Europe and in the rest of the world on November 19, 2020.

Yeah, I'm not too fussed about storage atm either. I think I'll be fine for at least a year.

Yeah, I would be surprised if people were complaining already. The only people that might affect is reviewers and streamers. 99% of the users won't be running out of space for a while.

Well people that for odd reasons decided to download all his PS4 library into the SSD would be out of space, but that would be their fault imho. You don't need to install 20 PS4 games at once since you can't humanly play they all at once.

He must be kinda deaf because I have seem many complain. For me though, being able to install about 3 games at once should suffice.

CoD games are a weird thing. Even to the end of last gen and into this, many big games barely take up 50GB. Warzone alone takes up 100gb for 'reasons'. Solution, don't install Wazone. :P

I've manage to survive with the default ps4 since launch so I'll see how this goes. I just tend to delete my old games as I never really go back to them once I'm finished, that's also the reason I DGAF about back compatibility.

Well yeah. It's not like there are tons of games to install at launch anyway!

Why would one need to store 700 gigs of stuff on there at the same time? Maybe have two or three or five games on there for variety, but why would you have 10 games in various stages of completion sitting there? It's like watching 10 movies at the same time bit by bit, switching between them as you go. Super immersive. Even if you don't like story driven games and play stuff that never ends, how many of those do you need at the same time? I guess if you have a family of five who all need their different games on there, I could see that space might be an issue.

it was a major issue last gen it took them way to long to add usb hdd support

Is not big deal now,but as time goes on and more games get released, it can eventually be a problem.

The OS should be scaled back so that there's more usable space in the SSD. Having the OS take up 20% of your HDD space is silly. But thankfully there will be good storage expansion options in a year. And a lot of games will let you choose what parts of the game to install, saving space.

That's not just the OS. it's Astro Bot and mainly the storage the OS uses to cache gameplay recording. As the machine (just like PS4) records the last 15 minutes of gameplay. Plus it does it at 4k now

Well in that case, deleting Astrobot, and disabling the gameplay recording cache should be options that people have to increase their storage capacity.

Astrobot takes up less than 3GB. Leave Astro alone!

I think it would be a waste of time to have the team working on something like this for very little space increase. They should just work on finding expandable storage that will work with their system and let the 3rd party companies take it from there.

Not to forget that a good part (like 10% of that difference is due to formatting and going from base 10 to binary accounting for storage).

I prefer quality of life in a better OS then getting a few extra GB of space.

What are you talking about? The SSDs that you'll be able to install in the PS5 won't be produced or restricted by Sony, is just that over 1Tb of 4.0 NVme that reaches about 7.0Gb/s won't be cheap for quite sometime, it is the top end of consumer level SSDs.
