Microsoft: We Have No Plans to Discontinue Xbox Live Gold at This Time - News

Microsoft changed its services agreements and started to refer Xbox Live as "Xbox online service," which has led to speculation Microsoft might be getting rid of Xbox Live or at least dropping its paid Xbox Live Gold service.

A Microsoft spokesperson has released a statement to The Verge saying there are no plans to change the service or Xbox Live Gold.

"The update to ‘Xbox online service’ in the Microsoft Services Agreement refers to the underlying Xbox service that includes features like cross-saves and friend requests," said the spokesperson. "This language update is intended to distinguish that underlying service, and the paid Xbox Live Gold subscription. There are no changes being made to the experience of the service or Xbox Live Gold."

The Verge also asked if Xbox Live gold was going away or being made free and Microsoft replied by saying, "We have no plans to discontinue Xbox Live Gold at this time. It is an important part of gaming on Xbox today, and will continue to be in the future."

Xbox Live Gold is required to play games online on the Xbox One, while on Windows 10 people can play games with Xbox Live support for online play for free.

MS found a way to make good money so no way they'd give this up. It's so good even Sony and Nintendo had to copy this.

The "at this time" part is incorrect.

Huh?

"Microsoft: We Have No Plans to Discontinue Xbox Live Gold at This Time "

They didn't say "at this time". That was added by one of the source writers (not a VGC writer). Their exact words were:

"This language update is intended to distinguish that underlying service, and the paid Xbox Live Gold subscription. There are no changes being made to the experience of the service or Xbox Live Gold"

Got it. Thanks. That is actually a pretty significant change.

I'm not sure why people were expecting Microsoft to leave good money on the table by ending paid Xbox Live subs. The Xbox group aren't Santa Claus, and they need to be able to financially justify Microsoft's investment in the brand. Dropping one of their most consistent streams of revenue would be silly.

Contradicting multiple insiders with good track records, their own terms of service being update, as well as 12 month Gold cards/codes being removed from stores. Sure thing, we believe you MS xD

GamingRabbit (on 05 August 2020)

That's what companies do.
You could have a document with the exact content what the insiders said, with the signature of the head of XBox
and they would still deny it.

My guess is that they're just leaving themselves room to change the way XBL service is sold/packaged. I see no reason to think they're going to discontinue it. But, they probably want to figure out ways for push people into GP. Discontinuing the 12 month sub, and maybe changing the name to fall under the GP umbrella could help with that.

DonFerrari (on 06 August 2020)

Wouldn`t make much sense for they to discontinue it. At most they would change name, price or features. As with the Gamepass and Xcloud making all same service with different tiers.

Azzanation (on 06 August 2020)

I didnt think they would, too much to lose.

mutantsushi (on 05 August 2020)

Obviously cancelling the yearly sub option isn't really consistent with Live Gold never changing in the slightest. I do think the "they are making Live Gold free" theory is a bit limited. Just as likely could be folding the yearly sub into LARGER service to collect even more money. While still selling single months of Live Gold alone.

Paid online is staying, no idea why people thought it wasnt. Too much money in it, even for MS with Xbox to leave it be.

Mr Puggsly (on 05 August 2020)

I don't expect it because it generates so much revenue. Gamepass simply can't bring in the same number of paid subscribers.

method114 (on 05 August 2020)

I knew this sounded to good to be true. MS would just be giving up a bunch of money for pretty much a guarantee that they will never make it back.

Microsoft: We have no plans to stop insulting your intelligence.
