Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Naughty Dog last week released a new State of Play dedicated to the upcoming PlayStation 4 game, The Last of Us Part II. It featured a closer look at the gameplay mechanics in the game, as well as over eight minutes of uninterrupted never before seen gameplay at the end.

The Last of Us Part II will be launching for the PlayStation 4 in June 19 and Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with CNET hopes it will be a defining game for this generation. However, he revealed the game will run on the PlayStation 5 without any issues.

"We hope this'll be a defining game for this generation," Ryan said when talking about The Last of Us Part II.

Sony will be hosting a PS5 event on June 4 at 1pm PDT / 4pm EDT / 9pm BST. It will be streamed on Twitch and YouTube. The digital event will be just over and hour in length and feature a first look at games in development for the next generation console.

"The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware," said Ryan during the announcement of the PS5 event.

"This digital showcase will run for a bit more than an hour and, for the first time, we will all be together virtually experiencing the excitement together. A lack of physical events has given us an amazing opportunity to think differently and bring you on this journey with us, and hopefully, closer than ever before. This is part of our series of PS5 updates and, rest assured, after next week’s showcase, we will still have much to share with you."

The PS5 will launch in Holiday 2020.

Was there ever any doubt?

Where is the headline coming from? why is this article just 2 pieces of old news stuck together, with neither points addressing the topic of the headline?

Okay, I see it squashed in between the old news.

Every PS4 game should run without issue on the PS5. No ifs, ands or buts about it. If they're willing to disregard compatibility with their earlier generations (unlike MS) then the bare minimum is ALL of the PS4 library, no exceptions.

It won't be all of ps4. They are using amd tech and it's a game by game basis they have to work with.

They "think" upwards of 4000 will work with it, but so far they have only tested like the 100 most popular games.
I dont think its by a game by game basis, they all work, they just cant garentee they are glitch free and run perfectly, until they put them through testing.

So far? The 100 metric you're referring to is from the Mark Cerny Deep Dive video, in which he said that at the time they had tested 100 of the most played games, and they expect most of those 100 to run without issues. That doesn't mean they haven't tested more games since then.

There is no such thing as 100% certainty in BC. Sony already released info couple days after that GDC video that almost all PS4 games are expected to work fine and improved on PS5.

Especially the PS5 Remaster of the game that should come out in 2021.

JRPGfan (on 01 June 2020)

Yeah something tells me the PS4 version running on the PS5 (which their talking about here), will run fine and probably look slightly better than on the PS4. However without a doubt they ll do a PS5 version with a remaster, that looks and plays even better.

They'll just patch it like they have been patching PS4 pro games.

Was already expected since they already said most of PS4 games will run fine and with improvements on PS5. So a flagship game that haven't released yet is certainly going to work fine.

I wonder if it will also run on the PS4 without issue, or that the game is too demanding for it. Not something all that rare at the end of a generation

tripenfall (on 01 June 2020)

It's made for the PS4 from the ground up so it should run a treat.....
Cyberpunk on the other hand.......

So Sony is delivering the minimum.
