Switch vs Wii – VGChartz Gap Charts – November 2018 Update - Sales

The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

Switch Vs. Wii Global:

Gap change in latest month: 1,921,420 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,919,345 - Wii

Total Lead: 5,339,506 - Wii

Switch Total Sales: 24,917,910

Wii Total Sales: 30,257,416

November 2018 is the 21st month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month the Switch has closed the gap by 1.92 million units. However, in the last 12 months the Wii has outsold the Switch by 3.92 million units. The Wii is currently ahead of the Switch by 5.34 million units.

The Wii launched in November 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. The Switch has sold 24.92 million units, while the Wii sold 30.26 million units during the same timeframe.

I can't wait to see what this comparison will be like when the Switch is at it's 24th month because there is still the Switch's 2nd Christmas period to add to it's sales whereas the Wii had its first 2 Christmas's before it's 21st month.

Add next week data to it and this gap shrinks down to 4.4M. I expect 3M or so gap after December. Saying that, I don't see Switch outselling the Wii anytime soon. Wii in its "quiet period" used to push 400k units per week. So unless we see that kind of numbers between January and April, it's not going to happen.

This will be an interesting ongoing comparison. Wii lost a bit of sales in 2009 compared to 2008, not much but a bit. Switch will probably gain momentum in 2019. After 2009 the Wii starts to drop. So the comparison could skew more in favor of the Switch - depending on the longevity of the system. This will be most interesting in 2020 when the new consoles of the competition are launching.

That 20-21 increase actually corresponds to the slight 8-9 increase of the prior year. If this is proportionate, then the 21-22 increase for Switch may show massive here. Also if you notice the system continued to rise from 10-13 at an increased rate, if this trend also becomes proportionate, then the Switch may be right back up and above the Wii by March.
