The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

 

 

3DS Vs. PSP Global:

Gap change in latest month: 31,281 – PSP

Gap change over last 12 months: 94,377 – 3DS

Total Lead: 2,575,457 – PSP

3DS Total Sales: 73,025,060

PSP Total Sales: 75,600,517

In the latest month the gap grew by 31,281 units in favor of the PSP when compared to the 3DS and by 94,377 units in favor of the 3DS in the last 12 months. The PSP currently leads by 2.58 million units.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 73.03 million units, while the PSP sold 75.60 million units.

A Switch vs Psp comparison would be interesting to follow.

At the end of 2006 (25 months Japan, 22 months America, 16 months Europe, 21 months average) PSP was at 19.6 million.

After 21 months, Switch is at 24.9 million.

It's pretty tight, but I think the PSP will finish slightly ahead. It's pretty telling that the #2 console of generation 7 can outsell the #1 console of generation 8.

I am lost on what you mean with the last part of this statement? We are in Gen 8 currently and the PS4 is number one and the #2 console of Gen 7 was the PS3? Or am I missing something?

I am talking about handhelds. PSP was the #2 handheld of generation 7 and 3DS is the #1 handheld of generation 8.
