The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

 

Switch Vs. 3DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 238,238 – Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 420,744 - Switch

Total Lead: 999,166 – Switch

Switch Total Sales: 16,108,373

3DS Total Sales: 15,109,207

March 2018 is the 13th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 238,238 units when compared to the 3DS during the same timeframe and by 420,744 units in the last 12 months. The Switch is currently ahead of the 3DS by 999,166 units.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 (however, 3DS sales have been aligned to March 2011, since it only launched at the end of February in Japan), while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. The Switch has sold 16.11 million units, while the 3DS sold 15.11 million units during the same timeframe.

It’s interesting to see just how well 3DS was doing in the beginning. What caused the sales to nosedive?

The 3DS had a huge price cut in the first year. When Nintendo cuts the price it just sacrifices later sales for a better start. Nintendo is more dependent on having good starts so it was a necessary action.

3DS had huge price cut around only 6 months after launch, from $250 to $170.

I believe the price cut ultimately did the Vita in as well. It was a tremendously aggressive move by Nintendo, that really paid dividends for the platform. Plus the Goodwill gesture of the Ambassador program for early adopters.
