The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

PS4 vs. PS3 and Xbox 360 Global:

Gap change in latest month: 401,901 – PS3 and X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,709,550 – PS3 and X360

Total Lead: 8,334,800 – PS3 and X360

PlayStation 4 Sales: 62,930,402

Total Combined PS3 and Xbox 360 Sales: 71,265,202

The gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 when compared to the PS4 during the same timeframe by 401,901 units in the last month. The PS3 and Xbox 360 increase its lead over the PS4 by 7.71 million units in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 4 is behind by 8.33 million units.

The PlayStation 4 in its first 46 months sold 62.93 million units, while the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have sold a combined 71.27 million units.

I'd be very surprised if PS4 caught the PS2 let alone PS3+X360. It's not impossible, though.

Yeah, there is no way the PS4 is catching the PS2. PS5 will be out in 2019. PS4 will pass the Wii and PS1 but not the Gameboy/Color

Let’s see how well all these huge bundles do this holiday, + the solid lineup of games next year. PS4 obviously isn’t going to keep up, but I think it’ll remain competitive for quite some time.
