The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

PlayStation 4 Vs. Wii Global:

Gap change in latest month: 502,494 – Wii

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,760,889 - Wii

Total Lead: 11,352,647 – Wii

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 54,818,019

Wii Total Sales: 66,170,666

January 2017 is the 39th month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Wii when compared with the Wii’s 39th month on sale. The gap increased by 502,494 units in the last month. Over the last 12 months it has increased by 3.76 million units. The Wii currently leads by 11.35 million units.

Both consoles launched in November. The Wii launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 54.82 million units, while the Wii sold 66.17 million units during the same timeframe.

What's with the sudden jump for the Wii? What game released during its 39th week?

There's actually no jump in week 39. Week 38 was 271, 39 was 289 and 40 was 261.000 units. The next bis releases were Super Mario Galaxy in week 50, Wii Fit in week 54, Smash Bros. Brawl in week 63 and Mario Kart Wii in week 73.

The chart is based on months not weeks. Smash, Kart, Galaxy, and Wii Fit were all out by that point.
