3DS vs PSP – VGChartz Gap Charts – December 2016 Update - Sales

The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

3DS Vs. PSP Global:

Gap change in latest month:  1,248,385 – 3DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,255,961– PSP

Total Lead: 1,099,306 – 3DS

3DS Total Sales: 63,328,575

PSP Total Sales: 62,229,269

After being behind for seven months, the Nintendo 3DS has regained the lead over the PSP. In the latest month the gap grew by 1.25 million units in favor of the 3DS and by 2.26 million units in favor of the PSP in the last 12 months. The 3DS currently leads by 1.10 million units.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 64.33 million units, while the PSP sold 62.23 million units.

Okay, this time the title of the graph makes absolutely no sense. The PSP doesn't have a lead, and the graph is for the net 3DS lead, so either justification doesn't work.

Reaching 70m by the end of its life is not a bad number, specially considering the mobile market has shrunk the handheld market to a third of what it was.

What a battle! I have a feeling PSP will win this though, due to the Switch. I hope I'm wrong, I love my 3DS!

I could see 3DS having a shot at surpassing PSP if it gets another Pokemon game.
