The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

3DS Vs. PSP Global:

Gap change in latest month:  223,933 – PSP

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,388,628 – PSP

Total Lead: 27,471 – 3DS

3DS Total Sales: 57,836,476

PSP Total Sales: 57,809,005

In the latest month the gap shrunk by 223,933 units in favor of the PSP and by 3.39 million units in the last 12 months. The 3DS currently leads by just 27,471 units and will more than likely fall behind the PSP next week.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 57.84 million units in its first 63 months, while the PSP sold 57.81 million units.

This is it, then? It took more than 61 months, but the PSP is going to lead soon enough. The Pokemon Sun/Moon push might allow the 3DS to outsell the PSP again, but it's not going to last.

It might push it over for the holidays due to them not being properly aligned (but even then I'm not sure), but the PSP will regain the lead in two months time after that.

You fought a worthy battle, 3DS, but in the end, the PSP was better geared for a war of attrition. Farethewell.

The mobile market hit the 3DS like a truck, while the PSP appeared in the best days of the handheld market, plus PS devices have a longer lifespam than Nintendo's. Better luck for Nintendo's next handheld, lets see what they can do in a full-mobile environement.

Indeed. While it would be logical that the handheld market would only continue to decrease into next gen, I believe there is a possibility for the next Nintendo handheld to grow over the 3DS, in part because the 3DS sort of... stumbled out the gate, thus limiting its sales potential, and also because the next Ninty handheld could devour the Vita's marketshare from this gen, since Sony has all but abandoned the HH market.

If the Hardware was the Issue of getting those Anime Games in Japan on the 3DS, which the Vita is getting. The NX Handheld may fixxed that issue = May perhaps get more different types of consumers. = May Beat the 3DS.
