Microsoft Stops Manufacturing the Xbox 360

Microsoft Stops Manufacturing the Xbox 360 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 20 April 2016 / 10,422 Views

After more than 10 years on the market Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has announced it has stopped manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles. The company will continue to sell the existing inventory of Xbox 360 consoles.

More than 78 billion hours of gaming were played on the Xbox 360 and nearly 486 billion gamerscore on 27 billion achievements. Over 25 billion hours were spent on apps over the lifetime of the console.

"From the original Zero Hour launch event, to the incredible reaction received last year at E3 when we announced that you could play your Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, the soul of Xbox 360 was about putting gamers at the center of every decision we make – and we apply this principle across our business to this day," said Spencer.

Microsoft plans to continue to support the console:

  • Xbox 360 owners will continue to receive Xbox Live services for their console, such as online multiplayer gaming and parties, access to the apps they use today, and Games with Gold and Deals with Gold.
  • Xbox Live servers that support Xbox 360 services will also remain online and active. Our Xbox 360 fans can continue to play their favorite games with the full support of Xbox Live.
  • Gamers will also be able to continue to buy over 4,000 Xbox 360 games or Xbox 360 accessories at retail and through our Xbox 360 store online, while supplies last.
  • Any Xbox 360 hardware will still be supported at xbox.com/support.
  • And Xbox One owners will be able to continue to enjoy available Xbox 360 games through Xbox One Backward Compatibility – at no additional cost.

"I want to personally thank the Xbox community – that includes the vast and diverse audience of gamers, developers and publishers who brought so much passion and creativity to the Xbox 360," added Spencer. "You are the heart of what we do at TEAM XBOX, and you have been critical to the success of Xbox 360.

"Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be sharing more of our plans for gaming on Xbox
One, Windows 10 and beyond."

I'm surprised they dont continue to push 360 as a budget console, it never went below $150 outside of holidays. Oh well, it had a great run and we can still play a lot of 360 games on X1 BC.

easily one of the best consoles in history, turning the xbox brand from something being outsold 6 to 1 by the ps2 to selling 1:1 with the ps3. one of the best libraries of games too, by far.

one of the best consoles? having to use batteries for the controllers, not compatibility with blu ray/only dvd, having to pay for multiplayer online, also didn't liked the menu interface style, not to mention the ps3's launch was bad and it still managed to outsold the x360 in the end and win the generation, that's impressive. the ps2 is one of the best for sure.

Having to use batteries? I think you mean there is an option to use batteries unlike in the DS3 pads, also there is a wired option and a rechargeable pack, you are right the system isn't compatible with blu ray, wrong that it was only DVD though but HDDVD is best forgotten, that said even with a PS3 and 4 I own one Blu Ray disk which came free with something years back and I've never watched it, streamed media killed physical for me a long time ago.

As for the PS3 winning the generation... The Wii mopped the floor with both HD systems, even with it's AA filled wiimotes lol.

End of an era. I have to admit I was lukewarm about the 360 when it first launched, but within its first year on the market it started getting some really amazing titles, and eventually it wound up being in my personal top 3 favorite consoles of all time.

Both the PS3 and the XB360 haven't been stocked by retailers here in Norway since like 2014. Kind of a shame, I was hoping to pick a 360 up for cheap :-/

Makes sense specially with more and more games BC on Xbox One, I loved my XBox360 although I did have 2 defect units I played a ton on the console. Especially the first Gears was a moment to remember

It's not like games on Xbox 360 is trash. They're still great. For people that are under classed, this will really be nice to hear. Prices should hover around 100-150 now

Ganoncrotch hershel_layton (on 20 April 2016)

you can buy a used 360 here in ireland with 12months warrenty for around 40 with 1 pad

hershel_layton hershel_layton (on 20 April 2016)

I don't see why this got negative likes. Huh, I'd think it was a good thing to see a great console for a cheap price.

Ganoncrotch hershel_layton (on 21 April 2016)

Probably the suggestion that you would need to be underclassed to be enjoying the X360 now, I know what you meant by it, but people might not like to be labeled as such if they're still happily banging away on the 360

hershel_layton hershel_layton (on 21 April 2016)

It's not like it suddenly becomes for poor people. What I meant was that it'll be more accessible to people who weren't able to afford it before.

Ganoncrotch hershel_layton (on 21 April 2016)

Yeah I know what you meant, I was just making a suggestion why people might have red thumbed it, still though if you are short of funds you could get the X360 or a ps3 for well under €100 here for the last few years now, Can get a slim Xbox360 for €50 or PS3 models starting from €80 looking at the second hand site I use, they offer 12 month warranty on that stuff too so probably the best way to get those systems now really.

The Wii is a pretty good price as well. Wii U is also at 200 if you look around on Amazon...

You can nab a Wii now here for €20 https://ie.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SWIIWIIE005#.Vxpr3Hp8GFY what makes it even more funny is when you see that the same online store also sells Wii Remote for €22 https://ie.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SWIIWIIE002#.VxpsFXp8GFY which means that the value of a Wii console is actually -€2 to them considering that the Wii comes with a remote when you buy it for €20 lol
