The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

3DS Vs. PSP Global:

Total Lead: 2,853,951 – 3DS

3DS Total Sales: 58,733,676

In the latest month the gap grew 1.49 million units in favor of the PSP. In the last 12 months the gap has shrunk by 2.21 million units. The 3DS currently leads by 2.85 million units.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 58.73 million units in its first 61 months, while the PSP sold 55.88 million units.

The longevity of the PS devices is going to make all the difference here. Although it's been really interesting to see the 3DS outperform the PSP for most of its active lifecycle, not bad for a device that has to compete against all the mobile world.

its actually pretty incredible. people talk a lot of crap about the 3DS performing badly next to the DS, but considering it may possible match the BEST ever selling non-Nintendo handheld from the past is pretty impressive

yes it is in this mobile world , but the more diverse market it does battle in is offset to a degree by having less effect competition than the DS had with the PSP so it's market share increase as stopped it falling below PSP.

It's really interesting how 3DS outsold the PSP during the first couple of years but now the PSP is vastly outselling it. Almost impossible of 3DS to reach PSP sales now, it sold like 5mil last year, so it would need at least 5 more years if there's no year-on-year drop in sales which is also not possible. And since the successor is coming either this year or 2017, i don't think it'll pass 70mil by the end of its lifetime. Still pretty good tho
