Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U in Japan for August we can see that the gap between the Wii U and PlayStation 4 continues to slowly shrink over time as Sony's console eats into the Wii U's head-start.
The Wii U has sold 2.52 million units lifetime, the PlayStation 4 1.67 million units, and the Xbox One 56,588 units.

The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U in August for a second straight month. The PlayStation 4 and Wii U have both outsold the Xbox One every month since it launched in September 2014.
The PlayStation 4 outsold the Wii U by 9,105 units in the month of August and the Xbox One by 63,000 units. The Wii U outsold the Xbox One by 53,895.
When you compare monthly sales to a year ago the PlayStation 4 and Wii U are both up; the PlayStation 4 by 40,012 units and the Wii U by 9,140 units.
