Mario Kart 8 Sales Top 5 Million Units Worldwide, Over 50% Attach Rate - Sales

Nintendo's flagship series, Mario Kart, has continued its success on the Wii U despite the console's limited sell-through.

Mario Kart 8 is the first Wii U game to top five million units sold worldwide at retail, according to VGChartz's latest sales data. It has taken the game 57 weeks to reach the milestone and continues to top 20,000 units sold on a weekly basis.

Mario Kart 8 has an attach rate in excess of 50%; the only game this generation to achieve such a high attach rate.

Mario Kart 8 launched worldwide in May 2014 with sales of 1.14 million units in its first week.

How many games have had a lifetime 50% attach rate? From a cursory glance at VGC data, Wii Sports and SMB are the only ones I'm seeing, and both of those were part of just about any bundle the console had.

I say this as a fan of the system, mind you - but it helps to have a very poorly-selling system, with a relatively small library.

Is this perhaps the most successful game ever, relative to install base, that wasn't a launch title?

I don't get how there are 10million wii U owners but only half have purchased Mario Kart? Even though the Wii U library is sparse

Only half? Not everyone likes Mario Kart. It's unreasonable to expect any game to have more than a 50% attach rate, unless it's the only game on the console.

Any game that has a 50% attach rate with a 3 year old system really shows the need and want for quality games on a system.

This is super impressive, but to be fair, MK8 is still currently well behind most games in the series, and and its current pace will likely not come anywhere near those titles in its lifetime. That said, I love Nintendo and love this game, and greatly hope the Nintendo NX is backwards compatible with the Wii U so that this and other Wii U titles get the recognition they deserve.

Well obviously Wii, DS and 7 aren't going to be beaten anytime soon but 8 will surely outsell Super Circuit, Double Dash and maybe even Super Mario Kart, and for it to be on the console with the smallest install base and still achieve that is very impressive.

Over 50% is positively insane.

meh...still doesn't make me want a Wii U. Hopefully their next console is backwards compatible, more powerful and not named Wii anything.
