Analyst: Sony Could Control the Console Market Exclusively - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 22 September 2014 / 10,173 ViewsBank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Eiichi Katayama has predicted that Sony could grow its marketshare in the console market to the point they push out their competitors and control 100 percent of it.
"Sony has the potential to make the game console market its exclusive territory," Katayama told The Wall Street Journal in a report.
Sony is planning to turn the PlayStation division into a hub for all of its entertainment businesses, according to the report. This includes streaming TV. Sony also wants to expand its PS Now game streaming service to TVs, tablets, phones and even TVs from other companies.
Sony is planning to introduce TV streaming to the PlayStation 4 by the end of the year in the US, according to Andrew House. Sony is talking with a range of content partners in the US. Viacom is the only confirmed partner which will bring MTV and Nickelodeon content to the PS4.
"A streaming-based approach needs to have a very wide funnel of devices, and that inherently means a broad- and manufacturer-agnostic approach," said House.

Impossible. Not so long as there are diehard fans of the competitors. If they truly make things so unprofitable for the competitors that Nintendo and Microsoft leave the console market, I predict that the console market will shrink considerably, with Nintendo gamers migrating to Nintendo portables and Xbox gamers migrating to PC and phones. There will be some overlap, of course, but no more than there would have been anyway from multi-console buyers.
ps2, enough said
"diehard fans of the competitors"? That's a fluffy word for fanboys.. I didn't know being a big fan of them implied never touching a Playstation
@Dechizen. False comparison... the PS2 was the defacto leader because of its library of 3rd party exclusives such as MGS, GTA, FF and KH... PS4 has NONE of these exclusives. And I seem to remember the Xbox and GC still managing to carve out a niche for themselves despite Sony's "domination", which was wiped out less than a generation later when the 360 and Wii hit the scene.
Basically he's saying MS and NIntendo are going to stop making home consoles and therefore Sony will have 100% of the market.
Good luck with that!
It isn't out of the realm of possibility. Microsoft has strongly hinted at getting out of the market and Nintendo is getting tons of pressure to make their games on iOS and Android.
Nintendo and Microsoft have both suffered huge losses in the console market, The original Xbox was such a gigantic loss for the company while the 360 was profitable, they aren't up very much all in all. Microsoft really only makes money on their software for the most part, the majority of their Hardware ventures have been failures... Xbox, Zune, Surface, etc... The surface was a loss of several billion just by itself. The company does some things good, but hardware has never been there thing.. and it shows this generation as well. Their software is hands down the best... the XB1 OS is amazing, but the system itself... garbage.
Nintendo has been bleeding money in the console market for years as well, even though the Wii sold so many units their actual software sales were a joke and the WiiU will not be profitable for them. Nintendo will likely go fully mobile at some point with some sort of way of connecting to a TV... remember mobile devices are ALREADY more powerful than the 360 or PS3 was, so this is likely a great thing for nintendo. In the next 10-15 years the PC will also likely suffer the same fate, likely giving way to your phone being your computer that you game on with a wireless keyboard/mouse. With diminishing returns it gets to a point that having a big brick is no longer worth it.
@Namhcir Phones can never match a PC ever, they don't have the cooling to hold up to the graphics processing power of a console let alone a PC.
@Namhcir you're completely uninformed about Nintendo... The top 15 selling console games of all time are all 1st party Nintendo titles (well technically Tetris isn't but it was a Nintendo exclusive) and of those games a whopping 7 are last generation Wii console games including the number one selling game of all time Wii Sport, which dwarfs it closest competition by over 40 million. Nintendo has Always made the bulk of its money in Software sales...
But more to the point, Sony and its Playstation brand have not had a flawless existence either. The PS3 was such a huge loss for the company that it didn't become profitable until 2013, a full 7 years after its initial release. While at the same time The Wii U is the very first Nintendo console to be sold at a loss. Even if the console sale numbers weren't as high as Sony's, every Sony console has been sold at a loss so if you check the figures over the years Nintendo has actually had a far greater profit margin than the Playstation brand.
Not happening, because one thing that has remained constant in the home videogame console industry since its inception is that when one major player disappears, another will emerge right behind it to take its place. Atari gave way to Nintendo / SEGA, SEGA gave way to Sony / M$, and if M$ or Nintendo exits the console hardware business it'll open the door for someone like Apple, Samsung or even Amazon to take a shot at it.
Plus, of the big 3, Sony is the LEAST financially stable at this point... both Nintendo and M$ have huge war chests despite their early struggles this gen, so they're not going away anytime soon.
If this happens will be the WORST scenario for industry. No competition leaves the way open for abuses and don't be fools to think that Sony will not abuse us.
They are desperate for money.
I will laugh when they go bankrupt :)

No! It won't happen! as much as I love Sony and the PS4 over the other two consoles... I want competitors! Only one option will be boring and meh. There will always be competition, even with how awesome the PS4 is doing, others will come. Valve and other companies will come in with the Hybrids (console/PC) steam machines, and Im sure if they compete with sony and microsoft, they will probably do the same thing, make them upgradable PC/console hybrids with the ability for gaming... who knows... future is uncertain. :)
I dont know what he means by 100% as that is already impossible. But I do think their marketshare will get to the point it will make it nearly impossible for MS to moneyhat and without Moneyhatting and buying games MS is sunk, XB1 will look alot like XBOX(2001) and that is a Halo box with a few other games.
probably be 60 percent ps4, 40 percent x1
I can see sony having 60% or maybe 70% of the market. 100% if both of Microsoft and Nintendo stopped making console games.
Won't happen in a million fucking years. Even if MS and Nintendo suddenly quit the industry it would go stagnant and Sony would do fuck all to innovate.
Competition is always a good thing.
Lol and Sony will be doing all this while they are bankrupt and gaziillion negative dollars in the bank
So Sony is going take over by doing what the X1 and 360 already do? I don't think they researched enough lol

No, they don't. They're not dominated US/UK (two or the three biggest markets) and if MS started losing that badly they would go on a spending spree.
True. But the PS4 is ahead in both UK and USA. And taking them off it is total domination already.
Both MTV and Nickelodeon apps are already on XBOX One, plus many others. Don't see how Sony will control anything with this.
Who cares to TV?
The future is Youtube, Netflix, HBO Go. This!
