When it comes to the SNES versus Genesis debate, we will probably never arrive at a consensus. But I think we can all agree that each system outperformed the other in certain genres. And that disparity is arguably the largest when it comes to shoot-'em-ups, aka shmups. This is one area where the Genesis significantly outpaced Nintendo's fourth-generation offering. That's not to say there was nothing of note on SNES. Indeed, there were a few gems, including R-Type III: The Third Lightning, developed by Tamtex and released in 1993/1994. For anyone who missed it growing up, you're in luck. It's back in a remake called R-Type Dimensions III.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, R-Type is a horizontally-scrolling shooter with a distinct hook: a Force pod you can attach/detach from the front or back of your ship. It functions as both an offensive and defensive asset, which is very much needed as you pilot an advanced (but fragile) fighter through the aggressive ranks of the Bydo Empire. R-Type III was the first series entry developed specifically for consoles, but rest assured: its arcade sensibilities are very much intact.

When those arcade sensibilities meet the unique graphical capabilities on SNES, the results are often outstanding. The first stage is a show-stopper. You'll fly through a massive space station, which rushes past you or, in some cases, rotates around you. Then the final boss attacks, not from in front, but from the background. First, it fires laser blasts that grow in size until they fill the screen, and then it bears down on you in the foreground. It's a brilliant display of the scaling, skewing, and rotation effects available on the Super Nintendo.

But that's R-Type III in a nutshell. It's always showing off. The game is filled to the brim with spectacular set-pieces, breathless escapes, and memorable moments. The level design is simply amazing, and it's enhanced with some mechanical novelties. That includes two new Force pods. Players accustomed to the rules in R-Type and R-Type II can now choose Shadow Force or Cyclone Force, in addition to the original Round Force. Each has its own strengths, weaknesses, and weapon variations. The SNES sequel also includes a new charge attack: the Hyper Wave Cannon, which grants you a temporary boost to your firepower but which will overheat your systems for a while. Together, these new options add a lot of depth to the gameplay.

Obviously, R-Type III has a lot going for it. However, it also has one significant problem: it's prohibitively difficult. You can probably endure through stages 1-3, but starting in stage 4 the game actively tries to end your life. In the final half of the game, you must navigate, among other things, crushing machinery, lava flows (both forward and in reverse), ceilings that turn into swarming monsters, illusory walls, and a portal that follows your ship and spawns waves of armored enemies. And that doesn't even include the multi-stage boss battles. In many instances, R-Type III is too punishing to truly enjoy.

Unfortunately, this remake, developed by KRITZELKRATZ 3000 and published by ININ, doesn't do enough to improve in this area. Now, to be fair, it does introduce a new Infinite mode, which allows unlimited lives and removes the original's stingy checkpoint system. This will allow you to see the end credits, but it feels a lot like a cheat code. It's just not very satisfying to F5 your way through the gauntlet. The game really needs to explore some middle ground between the impracticable and the foolproof. It could borrow a page from the excellent Gradius Origins collection, which provides an easy mode that shrinks the ship's hitbox and a training mode that allows you to practice challenging stretches. This is especially relevant to R-Type III, since so many areas require memorization.

In the absence of these resources, Dimensions III remains as punishing as the original R-Type III. Actually, it's a little bit harder, especially for those who've committed the SNES title to memory. That's because the remake is not an exact 1:1 transfer. There appear to be minor, but consequential changes to hit-boxes and collision calculations, which sometimes makes the player ship more vulnerable and enemy ships harder to take down. These are far from game-breaking, but they do make a notoriously challenging game even harder to master. The good news: ININ is aware of the issues, and has pledged to work toward a resolution.

So, if developer KRITZELKRATZ 3000 didn't work to make R-Type III more accessible, what did it work on? Well, the audiovisual piece. The Würzburg-based studio essentially rebuilt the game from the ground up, redrawing every stage, enemy, and bullet pattern. Not only that, but it reconstructed all the sound and music files, offering a high-fidelity interpretation of the amazing original soundtrack. The effort here is truly commendable. And the redone music is a great complementary piece. The 3D graphics, however, are a miss. The new visual identity of the game just doesn't work. It's plasticky and overly shiny. In a word, it's gaudy.

Now, there are some scenes where the new graphics make things much more dramatic or detailed. Take the roving portal in stage 6. In the original, it's a flat disc. In the remake, you can actually see space and time being sucked in. Or take the explosions at the end of the stage 4 boss battle. In the original, they're little popcorn puffs. In the remake, they're enhanced with stray sparks and dark clouds of smoke. So, it's not all bad. But I did find myself constantly swapping back to the original sprites from 1993/1994.

Not only did I do this for the superior visual experience (and to avoid some tinny, high-pitched sound effects endemic to the 3D version), but because it made the game more manageable. Due to the remake's particle effects, lighting flourishes, and complex backgrounds, it's sometimes difficult to avoid obstacles and keep track of enemy projectiles. The SNES version has a cleaner look with flatter, drabber backgrounds that make hazards more obvious. In addition, there's a short stretch in stage 3 where the game lags significantly — but only with 3D graphics enabled. When I switched back to 2D, the lag vanished.

Apart from the major visual overhaul, Dimensions III offers a handful of welcome extras. The game now supports simultaneous two-player cooperative play, as well as online leaderboards, and a music player with original and re-orchestrated tracks. It also offers an advanced difficulty mode from the outset, although you'd need to be truly masochistic to try it. And it provides several fun visual overlays and camera tricks, including 3D retro filters and a "crazy" mode that makes it look like you're flying at an angle into the screen. Finally, one thing to note for the purists out there: the remake is based on the Japanese version of the game, which means an uncensored stage 2 boss.

Three decades later, R-Type III remains one of the very best shoot-'em-ups on SNES. Regrettably, the R-Type Dimensions III remake doesn't do it justice. It fails to seriously address the original's unforgiving difficulty, and the big things it does address — graphics, lighting, and art — end up faring worse. That said, the new modes and bonus features help elevate the overall package. And the greatness of the original shines through, despite some hit-box and collision issues.

Full Article - https://www.vgchartz.com/article/467863/r-type-dimensions-iii-ns2/

Nintendo is reportedly looking to increase its production of the Nintendo Switch 2 this fiscal year by around to 20 percent to about 20 million consoles, according to people familiar with the matter speaking with Bloomberg.

The sources, that asked to not be named as the information is not public, say the number of units set to be produced is not final and it may be revised depending on demand.

Nintendo has forecasted that it would ship 16.50 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year ending March 2027. However, the company has been conservative with its forecasts recently as it initially expected to ship 15 million Switch 2 consoles in its first fiscal year and ended up shipping 19.89 million consoles.

"For them, there is no real downside in lowballing numbers first and then surpassing them later," said Tokyo-based industry analyst Serkan Toto. "The just-finished fiscal year is a good example."

Nintendo is increasing the price of the Switch 2, which could potentially hurt sales.

The Switch 2 will first increase in price in Japan on May 25 from 49,980 yen to 59,980 yen, while it will increase in the rest of the world on September 1. In the US, it will increase from $449.99 to $499.99, while in Canada it will go up from $629.99 to $679.99, and in Europe from €469.99 to €499.99.

This should be treated as a rumor until an official announcement is made.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick in an earnings report has reiterated Grand Theft Auto VI will still launch on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Fiscal 2027 is poised to be a breakout year for Take-Two, led by the November 19th release of Grand Theft Auto VI – arguably, the most anticipated entertainment property of all time, and we are excited that Rockstar Games will start their marketing campaign this summer," said Zelnick.

"Our initial financial outlook for Fiscal 2027 includes record Net Bookings of $8 to $8.2 billion. This reflects meaningful growth over last year, led by the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, along with successful execution across our entire portfolio.

"We expect to sustain this higher level of scale and generate strong cash flows well into the future as we release our robust, long-term development pipeline and capitalize on new opportunities across our highly established, multi-faceted business."

"So the next few weeks I don’t think it’ll be summertime yet, but when it’s summertime, Rockstar expects to start marketing GTA 6," he stated.

Reviewer's Note: Though limited in detail, certain critiques & praises demand I mention SOME SPOILERS. Read on at your own risk.

Iridium Studios shares a specific commonality with our protagonist Cadence: building and tweaking upon something – whether a track or gameplay template – with hopes of reaching the main stage. Iridium's Before the Echo (formerly known as Sequence) had a similar rhythm-based core that was limited by budget and scope; essentially a $5 EP. Fast-forward 15 years later to a new $25 double-sided album on that concept called People of Note. Is it more Thriller or filler?

Comparisons between Iridium and Cadence – hopefully – stop there, at least when it comes to her initial attitude. She's not one to care for Chorida, nor fellow Choridans, outside of wanting to receive their adulation. The news report of a looming astronomical event called "Harmonic Convergence" may as well be White Noise in her solipsistic focus to become the next pop icon. It's not all that surprising given music's all-encompassing role across the continent of Note; vast spits of land are divided across genre lines: architecture, fashion, and even potential wildlife reflect an area's adherence to EDM, rock, and so on. Despite her ambition – plus singer Lexxe's impressive pipes – the journey to winning this year's Noteworthy singing contest is dashed by a premier judge's off-stage critiques. Inspired to incorporate fresher sounds into her routine, she ventures to lands unknown and form a new band.

Of course, gathering party members for a frivolous competition is merely a primer for the narrative's grander aims. Though its music-centric puns, references, and sight gags fill in air time, Note adheres to certain classical JRPG customs: a quest where the world's fate eventually falls on your shoulders, turn-based combat system emphasizing cooperation between members' disparate talents, and so on. Swap out those anime "…" grunt sounds for Cadence's wide-eyed shock during in-game dialogue moments and Bob's your uncle. Quest design is focused on ferrying you along the golden path with only a helping of side quests and activities drizzled around. The distractions can be mechanically rewarding (especially puzzles) but narratively slim to keep attention on the main goal.

Credit where it's due to Writer/Director Jason Wishnov: beginning with such a self-absorbed protagonist is a tough hurdle. The first of several fully-animated musical cinematics emphasizes her tunneled commitment to stardom. Of course, life-long personal dreams aren't immoral on their own, but the framing here is less aspirational than, say, The Little Mermaid's "Part of Your World". Cadence's best friend and music producer, Cerrin, is a tag-along obliged to be at her beck and call (practically a walking doormat). It plays the long game; as Cadence ventures across Note and assembles her Mötley Crüe, the cracks in her initial outlook start to open.

It's also not useful to dwell on her shortcomings when it can be balanced by suspicious antagonists and humorous world-building. The rock-centered Durandins of Durandis have recently been besieged by country music folks of Homestead under false allegations. This not only sets up grander factional fights but also begins Cadence's journey towards cooperating with strangers and disinterring the wider musical world outside of pop – a decent meta joke there. It's easier to enjoy the adventure when there's something fresh around each corner:

Music-laden puns between locations, animals, and so on – though some are hit or miss.

The contents of this varied bestiary you'll fight are musically-themed Pokémon if given input by Cronenberg.

Despite whatever factional differences Durandins have over grunge, metal, or punk's superiority, they'll all reflexively say that pop is wretched dogshit.

Some 4th-wall-breaking flavor text touching on game design or story structure.

The list could go on.

These measured praises all come with one crucial asterisk: everything's told with a modern, theater-kid affect. To its credit, most of the voice acting is suitable for it and the actors sincerely inhabiting that spirit leads to a few gems; though most musical numbers only reach Disney Animation's straight-to-video sequels, the rival boy band's track is perfect in concept and execution. The wider problem is similar to that of Dragon Age: The Veilguard: mawkish sentimentality where important tensions can be eased at will. A character's tragic pitfall is but a brisk conversation away from being papered over; similarly, certain antagonists' motivations lack connective tissue to make either their villainy or redemption feel earned.

Combat is more in-tune, even if most bars are familiar. Each round is modeled like a line on a music sheet: the UI aesthetic, section breaks between every decision, and the allotted moves between both sides are framed like a prescribed tempo (3/4, 4/4, & so on). The primary goal is efficiency. Which tactics finish enemies in the quickest way possible? A big part of that is its real-time rhythm-action when attacking or healing; whichever of those is selected transitions to a brief quick-time event (QTE) that results in the maximum value if perfectly executed. Said QTE complexity varies from one-touch to quick successive button presses. Fumbling completely isn't ruinous either, since there's a reasonable number ceiling and floor.

Strategic acumen trumps twitch reflexes though. Between Cadence's more offensively-inclined custom moveset, guitarist Fret's mix of damage and healing, DJ Synthia's focus on buffs/de-buffs, and rapper Vox's flexibility, there's a lot to consider regarding which power to use and in which order. The typical 4/4 bout (four moves for both sides) lets you 'cheat' by seeing your enemies' move order. And since most options beyond a standard attack cost Battle Points (BP), the answer isn't always simple. Perhaps hunkering down for a round by healing certain characters and enfeebling enemies can serve as a useful respite; even resting everyone to restore more BP may be the best option.

Alongside this are each bandmate's Mash-Up Meter and shifting passive multipliers per round. For the latter, it's a simple color-coded round signifying that their attacks or heals are stronger. The former is a combo between two or more members that varies between a powerful strike against one opponent, multiple opponents, a mass healing of allies, and so on and so forth. It's quite intricate, with interesting permutations locked away behind side quests. The major conflict, however, is how it's only filled by them taking damage. So, effectively, getting an important lifeline comes down to how well your team can drag out a fight versus a more nuanced value system. Beyond that, a specific Mash-Up that "severely" weakens an enemy's attack power feels like false advertising – especially with no listed percentages to judge its worth.

The nuts 'n bolts tend to read like baby's first JRPG, but its marriage with music succinctly highlights the importance of preparation within both domains. Discovering or buying better weapons for each bandmate doesn't merely up their attack damage but also potentially grants more slots to use their powers – or "Songstones," as they're called. Each member can select between generic and character-exclusive moves within their respective Songstone pool to tweak whenever outside of combat. Alongside this is a universal shared collection of "Remix Stones" that enable certain buffs, such as reducing BP cost or healing after each use. What starts as a rather simplistic means of selecting a couple of Songstones with a buff expands into this spider-web of potential options wherein several of them can share the same Remix or a favored one can have multiple Remixes. There's a nice layer of strategy in weighing how to share between both Stone types and how to exploit them.

Past all of the pre-planning and fighting, puzzle-solving plays critically alongside a few other ancillary mechanics. The breadth of its brainteasers is quite surprising, from small math games to intricate physics-based challenges. What begins as more familiar setups like redirecting lasers expands into Cadence acquiring a few powers to manipulate platform levels and more. Their depth is more debatable, but at least there's a consistency to them. The same can't be said of various one-off concepts like playing detective or quasi-treasure hunter. The latter involves repetitively pinging a special detector to see how close you are to an invisible item. A good rule of thumb for developers: if YOU comment on how arbitrary and time-wasting a mechanic is, perhaps the better idea is to scrap it altogether.

As with Iridium Studios, Cadence also shares an important commonality with the game proper. She doesn't accomplish her dream through continual iteration by herself but rather through a collective effort after absorbing several distinct personalities discovered along the way; likewise, People of Note is an ensemble of various storytelling and gameplay components fashioned into a nuanced whole. The danger is in how often this blend sounds off-key instead of like a harmonious symphony. Ambitious as the composition may be, sometimes the band is rushing and other times it's dragging.

VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

The year 19**; Spatial anomalies known as “Otherworlds” have appeared without warning. The government’s “Danger Zone Countermeasures Office” has been unsuccessful in repelling the threat and determining its origin. Players take control of investigator Reona Minazuki, who has been awakened from a 10-year slumber inside an anomaly known as the “Sarcophogus” and acquired a keen sensitivity to the Otherworlds. Working alongside her colleagues and commanding officers, Reona strives not only to protect humanity but help a dear friend.

The Thrill of Survival

Dive into the depths of the Otherworlds, investigate the anomalies, and fight your way out by any means necessary. Third-person gunplay keeps you on your toes against enemies that behave erratically and ravenously, while stunned enemies can be melee’d into submission. Players will need to exercise careful inventory management and situational awareness to keep threats from growing. Influenced by her sensitivity to the Otherworlds, Reona can also acquire and upgrade unique active and passive abilities from the anomalies through the “Demi-Humanization System.”

Customize Your Fighting Style (and Fashion Style)

In a world full of alien threats, you’ll need all the options you can get for dealing damage. ANOMALITH sports a massive variety of weapons, attachments, outfit items and artifacts dole out good (or bad luck) while infusing weapons with additional abilities.
Carry Out Investigations in the Otherworld

Meet a broad cast of characters at the home base in between missions, unlocking powerful upgrades and learning about the world Reona is defending. While diving through the Otherworlds, players can collect more than 200 investigation reports detailing the behaviors and mysteries of each anomaly and other foreign objects, painting a clearer picture of the threat the world faces.

Talent That’s No Anomaly

ANOMALITH brings together some of the industry’s greatest and most promising designers and artists, including scenario lead Romeo Tanaka (Stella of the End, Humanity Has Declined), character designer MON (Nisio Isin’s Legends series), and composer Yuka Kitamura (Elden Ring, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls III, and Witch Hat Atelier). ANOMALITH is being published by FuRyu and developed by Winning Entertainment Group (formerly Natsume Atari).

"As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.

"Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.

"We're proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all.

"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us. From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we'll see you in the stars."

Read details on the Monument of Triumph update below:

Destiny 2 Dev Team

Since Destiny 2 launched, Guardians have turned back the Darkness, defeated gods, shattered blades, banished nightmares, outplayed Savathûn at chess, and forged legendary stories across the Sol system.

On June 9, Destiny 2: Monument of Triumph will be available to all players.

We are inviting all Guardians to take part in a celebration of these accomplishments: Legends, Dredgens, Renegades, Conquerors, New Lights — and everyone in between.

Each year since launch, Moments of Triumph celebrated highlights from Destiny 2's most recent chapter. This time, the Monument of Triumph update will broaden that celebration, bringing together experiences from across Destiny 2.

Legendary Marks return from ages of triumph past! Earned by completing a game-wide array of Triumphs, they will grant access to a vast selection of free armor ornaments, accessories, weapon engrams, and more. An additional Title and armor ornament set awaits those who range widely in their deeds, immortalizing your legacy in Destiny 2.

But this update has much more to offer than the Monument itself.

Rediscovering Sol

We've been embracing the mission of making this update feel meaningful, looking back at many of the requests that players have shared with us over the years while finding ways to bring some of them to life.

And now, on June 9, we're aiming to deliver a collection of love letters to players across all activity types within Destiny 2. Although many were intended for future releases, we wanted to make sure you had them in this update.

Our goal is to ensure Destiny 2 can be a place you come back to and feel rewarded no matter what you play, while also having enough variety in activities to fit your mood for a given play session.

Whether you're looking to play competitively, slay a god or two, or just spend some time exploring the destinations... there will be something for you.

Below you'll find a laundry list of features and bullets but expect further blog breakdowns to give a full picture. And of course, a few surprises for you to find on launch day, too.

Story

Monument of Triumph will deliver small character beats to leave the story and characters in interesting places, touching on themes across Destiny.

We encourage reading and exploring to find all the easter eggs, callbacks, reveals, and love for the lore hounds.

The Return of the Director

We have embraced the player feedback about the Director and Portal, and a newly refreshed Director returns to its rightful place as the center of activities in D2.

All portal activities are still available via lists in the nodes at the bottom of the Director.

Pantheon 2.0

A new Pantheon is coming as a permanent addition with a fresh slate of bosses to challenge and overcome.

June 9: The first slate of bosses becomes available, with two activities each featuring a unique roster of bosses.

June 13: What we're calling the gauntlet, the full line-up of boss encounters in a single activity.

June 16: Encounter rotations begin; players can attempt featured single boss encounters for rewards.

Raid and Dungeon Loot Updates

All raid and dungeon weapons and armor have been revisited to bring them to modern standards, with full Tier parity, set bonuses, new perks, and more.

Crafted weapons will have an upgrade path for Tiers 1-5, with more information coming in a future article.

Weekly Featured Raids and Dungeons return, giving players additional opportunities for high-tiered rewards each week.

We have all the details and specifics planned for an upcoming TWID.

Destinations: A trip down memory lane

Destination weapons and armor have also been revisited to bring them to modern standards, with full Tier parity, set bonuses, new perks, and more.

Some destinations will have Distortions, a new addition to bring more variety and a touch more challenge to your time planetside.

Distortions also bring unique rewards to earn for participating, beyond your slate of destination drops.

Sandbox: New Abilities and Ability Updates

New Aspects

Solar Hunter: Crackshot

Void Warlock: Soul Siphon

Solar Titan: Shieldburst

New Hunter Melee

Void Hunter: Phantom Surge

New Grenades

All Classes: Strand Slicewire Grenade

All Classes Stasis Shatter Grenade

Class Specific Abilities

Warlock, Titan, and Hunter are all getting some new love. Mindspun will interact with Threadling Grenade, Ward of Dawn is getting a complete rework, Trapper's Ambush has new capabilities, and more.

Sandbox: Elevating Exotics

All Exotic armors earned since The Edge of Fate launched will be automatically upgraded to have Tier 5 stats.

We've made some changes to a handful of Exotic armors.

As an example, what if Warlocks could throw two Nova Bombs in quick succession to create an even larger explosion?

More on this in a future TWID!

Various Exotic weapons will receive a tuning pass, and many will be receiving Catalysts.

Portal Overhaul

All Portal activities are still available to players via the portal nodes at the bottom of the Director.

We've taken a deep pass on the Portal's difficulty system to ensure players can approach the ops categories and have fun with Destiny 2 while still being rewarded.

We want to remove choice paralysis; players should be able to sign in and find the fun quickly rather than being mired in stacking as many difficulty modifiers as possible to earn desirable rewards.

We are expanding our weapon offerings within portal activities; each experience (Solo ops, Fireteam Ops, Arena Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, Gambit Ops) will offer a different pool to earn.

We're also updating armors across the Portal, with new art and new set bonuses (and some reprisals, too), while adding an exclusive armor to Competitive Crucible.

Onslaught and Crawls (Contest of Elders, and The Coil) have received balance passes on difficulty and length.

All three activities will once again feature escalating difficulty over time, rather than starting at the highest difficulty from the start.

Onslaught has been rebalanced to remove revive tokens and get you more scrap more often to bring back the feeling of building up defenses over time.

“Shaxxmaxxing” has returned.

A few weapons will also be making a return, only available through Onslaught...

Contest of Elders has been reduced from four laps down to three to help the activity flow better.

Crucible Playlists, Private Matches, and Balance

We have three new game modes coming to the Crucible: one entering our playlist rotation and two more available via private matches.

Playlist - Arena: Gunplay-centric with some old school Bungie PvP vibes.

Private Matches – Glass Cannon: A throwback to Destiny 1 balancing.

Private Matches – Software: Third-Person Abilities Only – Think Mayhem, but a little more wild.

Iron Banner will run every four weeks, and Trials will appear on non-Iron Banner weekends. Both game modes feature tiered loot and new armor sets to earn.

Heavy Metal returns with a third vehicle type, The Cabal Walker, a brand-new map, mixed vehicle combat and vehicle selection.

A full suite of Competitive Crucible weapons will become tiered and, as mentioned above, a unique armor set has been added to incentivize more competitive play.

Gambit Ops

Gambit is being upgraded to an Ops category and receiving a rewards refresh.

New armor to earn with a unique set bonus.

We're reprising iconic Gambit weapons as tiered gear with new perks to earn.

Seasonal Events

Seasonal events are being retired.

A collection of weapon Rewards for Festival of the Lost, The Dawning, Guardian Games, and Solstice can be earned through engrams on a Monument of Triumph vendor.

Armor ornament sets previously available for Bright Dust will be available, not only through direct exchange, but also through Bright Engram Focusing (more on that below).

Eververse

Silver & Bright Dust

Bright Dust will continue to be an earnable currency through gameplay objectives, and we have expanded the offering of cosmetics that can be acquired with this currency.

Silver will continue to be available for players to purchase and exchange for various items in the Eververse.

Bright Dust rotation is being changed from weekly to daily, giving players more opportunities to exchange this earned currency for the cosmetics they desire.

We've added a Focusing system for your Bright Engrams.

Using an Engram and some Bright Dust, you can select from an array of Engrams that guarantee the item category result and do not produce duplicates, gradually filling out your collection.

Rewards Pass

The Monument of Triumph update brings an updated rewards pass (what was originally planned for Shadow and Order), featuring a new Exotic Hand Cannon, Armor Ornaments, and more.

We have increased the number of cosmetic rewards on the pass as well, including multiple Armor Ornament sets, ghosts, shaders, and more.

Yes, we said and more twice – look, we put a lot of extras on this thing.

We hope you enjoy it!

Armor Ornaments: True Exotic Armor Transmog

Starting June 9, players may apply common/uncommon/rare/legendary armor ornaments to their Exotic armors, visible in PvE environments!

Destiny 2: The Collection

We are bundling all Destiny 2 content packs into a singular purchase, available on June 9.

This includes campaigns, Dungeon Keys, the 30th Anniversary Pack, and more.

Individual content packs and expansions will also receive permanent markdowns in June.

One more thing… Sparrow Racing League Returns!

Sparrow Racing League (SRL) returns as a permanent addition, reopening tracks from the original Destiny experience and adding a new space to race opponents on.

We've created a new, unique weapon set to earn by competing in races.

Armor sets return with a new set bonus, and numerous cosmetics (including horns) will be available to earn.

We'll have a full breakdown of SRL in the coming weeks, previewing the upcoming feature.

Publisher Frontier Foundry and developer Complex Games have announced turn-based tactical RPG, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Deathwatch, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

View the announcement trailer below:

Read details on the game below:

Command the Imperium’s most elite alien-hunters in a brutal, turn-based tactical RPG. As an Inquisitor of the Deathwatch, every squad you build and every decision you make shapes the fate of a sector under siege from Genestealer Hivecults, Orks, T’au, and the forces of Chaos.

Chaos Gate Evolved

As a direct sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, this new chapter builds upon the critically acclaimed first game. Broader class identity, new squad customisation and composition, and a wider variety of missions and units creates deeper tactical choices. New vehicles such as the towering Redemptor Dreadnought, the agile Scout Sentinel, and the battle-hardened Leman Russ tank bring more devastating ways to deliver the Emperor’s will.

Build Your Team

Recruit and customize elite specialists from across the Imperium. Combine classes, weapons, abilities, and unique Chapters to forge squads that are tailored to each mission.

Tactics That Reward Precision

Combat demands discipline. Positioning, timing, squad synergy, and environmental hazards all determine the flow of combat. Utilize terrain as a weapon and out-plan threats through disciplined, deliberate execution.

A Sector at War

Fight across the war-torn worlds of the Tyrian expanse against seven distinctive enemy factions. Each force brings unique behaviors, battlefield pressures, and tactical demands. You and your team must adapt or perish.

Forge Your Own War in Skirmish Mode

For commanders seeking pure combat focus, the new Skirmish Mode offers standalone battles. Configure your Kill Team, test new squad compositions, experiment with different tactics, and take on select factions in these new encounters. Whether you are refining your strategy or pushing the limits, Skirmish Mode gives you total control.

Class Masterclass – Discover and master over 40 unique classes, allowing for endless tactical combinations.

Artistically Authentic – Entirely created by human hands—zero AI involvement.

Units and Combat Systems

Skill Customization – Beyond innate class skills, enhance your units by equipping Skill Rings. Combine these with class abilities to create devastating skill combos tailored to your playstyle.

Resource Management – Skills are divided into Active and Passive. Active skills require strategic use of Mana or Items as a cost to deliver immediate impact on the battlefield.

Equipment and Crafting – Standard weapons do not have a durability system and can be used indefinitely. However, powerful Masterwork weapons crafted by the Blacksmith offer superior stats but come with limited durability.

Challenge Your Strategy – There is no permanent death in the standard mode. However, for those seeking a challenge, Hard Mode features a “Zero Casualty” rule—if any player unit falls in battle, it is an immediate Game Over.

Developer Quantic Dream announced it will discontinue development and end service for the free-to-play team-based third-person action strategy game, Spellcasters Chronicles, on June 19. Any in-game purchases will be eligible for a full refund upon request.

The game released in Early Access for PC via Steam on February 26.

"Today, Quantic Dream is announcing the discontinuation of the development of Spellcasters Chronicles," reads an update from the developer. "With this project, our teams set out to explore new creative territories and create a bold, original multiplayer experience. Spellcasters Chronicles allowed us to experiment with new concepts and bring to life an ambitious game shaped by the talent, creativity, and dedication of everyone involved.

"However, in today’s particularly challenging market environment, the game has not reached the audience needed to ensure its long-term sustainability. We have therefore made the difficult decision to refocus our efforts on our other projects.

"As part of this decision, the studio will undertake an internal reorganization. We are fully committed to handling this transition with fairness, care, and respect, and will prioritize internal reassignments wherever possible to support our other productions.

"The development of Star Wars Eclipse is not affected by this decision and continues as planned.

"Spellcasters Chronicles will remain accessible online until June 19, 2026, when the servers will be shut down. All amounts spent during Early Access will be eligible for a full refund upon request. Further details will be shared in the coming days through the game’s official channels and Discord.

We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined us on this journey, the creators and community members who supported the project, and the teams whose remarkable work brought Spellcasters Chronicles to life."

EMPULSE is an upcoming fast-paced six-versus-six movement shooter. Outmove and outgun your opponents across the post-utopian streets of Freehold. Fight for control of mechs to turn the tide of battle for your Crew.

Every district in Freehold gives you the surfaces, the verticality, and the routes to chain together movement and find your flowstate.

Claim the Mech. Control the Fight.

Player-controllable mechs spawn on the map, armed with heavy weapons, unique abilities, and a massive health pool. Claim one to dominate the next firefight. Or rally your squad to bring one down and swing momentum back in your favor.

Developers that have worked on Mass Effect, Dragon Age, The Long Dark, and Anthem have announced the establishment of a new studio based in Canada called Studio Reset.

The studio is working on a "neon-noir supernatural mystery game" set in a stylized Canadian cityscape.

"Studio Reset is smaller by design," said Studio Reset producer and creative director Kaelin Lavallee. "We are not trying to recreate blockbuster development at a smaller scale. We want to build original worlds with focus, intention, and a team that can stay close to the work, the creative vision, and the players we are making it for."

Studio Reset design director Kris Schoneberg added, "We’re interested in mysteries that trust the player. A good mystery should make you feel clever, not confused. With Parallax Deduction, we want players to understand that perspective is part of the evidence. Who is looking at the case matters, because each investigator brings their own expertise, history, instincts, and blind spots."

Studio Reset art director Francis Lacuna stated, "We want Studio Reset to be known for games about strange places, hidden stories, and the curious characters compelled to uncover them. Visually, we’re building toward a world that feels beautiful, uneasy, and familiar in the wrong way. The kind of place where the ordinary starts to feel like it is hiding something."

Visit the studio's website here.

Read details on the developer below:

Founded by Kaelin Lavallee, Kris Schoneberg, and Francis Lacuna, Studio Reset brings together a proven team with a long-standing working relationship and a shared belief in building games with intention and sustainability. After years spent contributing to large-scale narrative worlds, the founders are choosing a smaller, more intentional model: original [intellectual property], sustainable ambition, and experiences shaped around the players they are made for.

Studio Reset’s first project channels the satisfaction of classic adventure mysteries while modernizing the form through bold 3D visuals, multiple investigators, intuitive clue-solving, mature themes, and meaningful replayability. The game is designed for players who want a mystery that feels strange, atmospheric, and deeply thought-out, without forcing them through arbitrary puzzle logic.

The studio is also taking a “no moon logic” approach to clue and puzzle design. In adventure games, “moon logic” is what happens when a puzzle solution feels arbitrary, forcing the player to guess the designer’s personal logic rather than following clues. Studio Reset wants the opposite: if a player uncovers a hidden motive, opens a locked path, or connects two strange details, the solution should feel like something they could have reasoned toward through observation, context, and deduction.

Studio Reset’s debut project is currently in its early stages with support from the Canada Media Fund. Today’s announcement marks the beginning of a longer development journey.

The team is opening the door early to players, industry peers, and potential partners drawn to mystery, atmosphere, and story-rich games built around discovery.

Xbox has hired two new executives to join the leadership team, according to The Game Business.

Video game industry analyst Matthew Ball has been hired as the Chief Strategy Officer. He previously worked as the head of strategy and planning for Amazon Studios and wrote the best-seller The Metaverse.

His first job will be to strengthen the console side of Xbox, which has struggled in recent years. Xbox has increased the price of its Xbox Series X|S consoles due to the rising cost of RAM and storage. He admits he is "pretty frightened" RAM shortages.

Scott Van Vliet, who previously led the teams at Azure OpenAI and AI Core infrastructure at Microsoft, has been hired as the Chief Technology Officer. He does have experience in games having worked on the Minecraft: Fire TV Edition, as well as at Amazon Game Studios.

His role at Xbox "will be to improve how Xbox builds products so teams can move faster and deliver stronger results."

In addition to the two new hires, Xbox has promoted Chris Schnakenberg to Corporate Vice President, Partnerships & Business Development. He had spent 12 years at Activision Blizzard in multiple roles. His focus at Xbox will be third-party games, publishers and developers working with Xbox.

Embracer Group announced it plans to split into two separately publicly listed companies on Nasdaq Stockholm in calendar year 2027.

Embracer will remain one of the two companies, while the other, Fellowship Entertainment, will include The Lord of the Rings, Tomb Raider, and other IPs.

Embracer will be "a natural home for proven entrepreneurs, supported by a more efficient structure, with enhanced governance, tighter cost control, and disciplined capital allocation." Fellowship Entertainment will be "an IP-led entertainment company built around game development, publishing and a licensing focus, as the stewards of The Lord of the Rings, Tomb Raider, and many other great intellectual properties."

"This separation is about sharper management focus and clearer accountability, giving each business the structure and leadership to realize more of its full potential," said Embracer Group Chair of the Board Lars Wingefors.

"I am truly excited about Fellowship Entertainment’s prospects to organically grow substantially over the coming years. I am equally optimistic about the potential of the deep portfolio and selective M&A opportunities for a more focused Embracer. As Chair and major shareholder, I am strongly committed to support the preparations to drive value in two listed companies over the long-term."

Embracer Group CEO Phil Rogers added, "Our direction is clear: to build a more disciplined group with two distinct businesses, each with a mandate and a structure that supports transparency and execution. I am confident that this is the right path forward to deliver long-term value for our fans, our businesses and IPs, our people, and our shareholders."

Read details below:

Background and strategic rationale:

Increase management focus to capture the full potential of the valuable or strategic assets and IPs within the group.

Enable Fellowship Entertainment to accelerate the formation of a group of world-class studios with leading publishing and licensing capabilities.

Allow Embracer more flexibility to pursue accretive but opportunistic bolt-on M&A, especially to strengthen its already successful and sizable niches in for example, mobile, distribution, retro, films, remakes and remasters.

Fellowship Entertainment
Fellowship Entertainment aims to become an IP-led entertainment company built for growth and enduring momentum, with some of the world's most beloved franchises at its centre as the stewards of The Lord of the Rings and Tomb Raider intellectual properties. As a standalone company, Fellowship Entertainment will have a better structure to maximize the potential of its highly strategic franchises.

Fellowship Entertainment will be the home of critically acclaimed studios and companies: 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Dark Horse Media, Eidos-Montréal, Fishlabs, Flying Wild Hog Studios, Gunfire Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Redoctane Games and Warhorse Studios. Fellowship Entertainment aims to create a new publishing group, operationally consolidating the talents from PLAION and other parts of the group. IPs include Darksiders, Dead Island, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Metro, Remnant, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Tomb Raider, and many more.

Fellowship Entertainment will report through two business areas:

Development & Publishing

Licensing

Licensing will focus on dedicated IP management, aiming to transform franchise ownership into recurring revenue streams across games, film, consumer products, and additional areas.

Embracer
Embracer will be a natural home for proven entrepreneurs and creative talents, supported by a more efficient structure, with enhanced governance, tighter cost control, and disciplined capital allocation. This will be combined with optionality from structural initiatives, including a continued focus on profitability and M&A, to drive shareholder value.

Entrepreneurially managed companies with deep heritageinclude Aspyr, Beamdog, CrazyLabs, Deca, Demiurge, DPI Merchandising, Limited Run Games, Milestone, PLAION Partners, PLAION Pictures, THQ Nordic (including 35 studios and subsidiaries), Tripwire and Vertigo Games. Intellectual properties include owned IPs such as Arizona Sunshine, Biomutant, Destroy All Humans!, Desperados, Gothic, Killing Floor, Kingdom of Amalur, MX vs. ATV, REANIMAL, Ride, Screamer, Titan Quest, Wreckfest, and many more IPs, as well as licenses such as Hot Wheels Unleashed and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Embracer operations will report through four business areas:

PC/Console Games

Mobile Games

Entertainment & Services

Other

Transformation structure and process
The Board of Directors proposes that shares in Fellowship Entertainment will be distributed to the shareholders of Embracer Group and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm.

The intention of the Board of Directors of Embracer Group is to carry out the spin off by way of a dividend distribution of all shares, a so-called Lex ASEA dividend. Such dividend is subject to shareholders’ approval at a general meeting in Embracer Group. The current dual-share class of A and B-shares will be replicated into the new public company. Subject to approval of the general meeting of Embracer Group and certain other customary conditions, it is anticipated that a listing of Fellowship Entertainment can be completed in calendar year 2027.

As part of the spin-off and ahead of the separation the full capital structure, including both equity and debt, will be reviewed in Fellowship Entertainment and Embracer to create the best possible long-term foundation for each entity as a separately listed company.

Leadership and organization
In addition to Müge Bouillon’s role as Group CFO she is appointed as Deputy CEO of Embracer Group, effective today. In this expanded role, her key responsibility is to set up an enhanced governance structure for the Embracer business segment.

Embracer Group’s current CEO Phil Rogers and COO Lee Guinchard remain in their respective roles of Embracer Group, with the key responsibility, from today, to prepare Fellowship Entertainment for its spin-off. At the time of spin-off, they will transition to become the CEO and COO of Fellowship Entertainment, along with CFO Müge Bouillon.

A recruitment process for a CEO and CFO for Embracer has been initiated, with a plan to have appointments in place well ahead of the spin-off of Fellowship Entertainment.

Investor presentation
Embracer Group will hold a webcast presentation for investors, analysts, media and other stakeholders today, May 20, at 09:00 CEST, following the company´s Q4 presentation on the same date.

Further details regarding the separation process and other key process components, along with FAQ will follow this press release and be available on the company’s website.

For the past 30 years, developer Inti Creates has been synonymous with two things: action-platforming and pixel art. The studio, which was built by former Capcom employees back in May 1996, has made a name for itself over the last three decades by releasing punchy, side-scrolling platformers with decidedly old-school art styles. Its latest project, Kingdom's Return: Time-Eating Fruit and the Ancient Monster, falls into this same broad category, although with something of a twist: strategic town-building. Take note, however: the action and strategy phases don't receive equal attention.

Kingdom's Return takes place in the kingdom of Almacia, tucked away in a remote corner of the continent of Norlant. Despite its isolated nature, the kingdom is (or was) unusually prosperous, thanks to its proximity to magical fairies. You see, adventurers across Norlant would make pilgrimages to the area to form special pacts with the fey creatures nearby. When one such hero makes their way to Almacia to carry on this timeless tradition, they're met with shocking news: the whole area has been magically transported to the distant future, causing all the buildings and facilities to fall into disrepair. Now, it's up to you and your new fairy companion, Chronos, to set things right.

The premise in Kingdom's Return is quite good, but the game doesn't do anything especially interesting with it. Despite the catastrophic nature of the emergency, the stakes feel quite low. It doesn't help that the kingdom and the surrounding areas feel mostly devoid of human life, apart from a handful of two-dimensional NPCs that exist primarily to provide exposition or send you on quests. Overall, the story is designed to be more silly and cozy than anything, which is, honestly, perfectly fine. It exists to justify the gameplay and to push the campaign forward. And on those terms, it works. Just don't expect to remember it fondly — or remember it at all — after the credits roll.

You will probably remember the gameplay more warmly. As mentioned before, it's a mix of action-platforming and strategic town-building. Let's start with the action phase.

From your base in Almacia, you will set out into the wilderness beyond the borders of the kingdom. Once there, you'll view everything from a top-down isometric perspective. You can wander aimlessly, picking fights with roving enemies and opening treasure chests, or make a bee line for the next point of interest — typically a forest, cave, or other monster-infested location. In either instance, whether you collide with an enemy or enter a dungeon, the perspective will change to that of a classic side-scroller. This is where the game spends most of its time.

Each dungeon is split into different areas and floors; and in every one you must defeat all the rank-and-file monsters in order to proceed. While the combat here isn't as flashy or deep as that in other Inti Creates' games, it's perfectly competent. There are four playable characters, each with their own class-based abilities, but all of them share basic commands: regular attack, special attack, jump, dash, and guard. Again, it's not revolutionary, but it's snappy, precise, and reliable. It can be quite entertaining to slash and fire at incoming enemies, anticipate telegraphed attacks, and dodge and deflect with perfect timing. And when you mix in special abilities, which you can unlock and assign at your discretion (if you have enough skill points), it feels like you have a lot of control over the flow of battle.

There is an issue, though: repetition. As you move between areas and floors in a given dungeon, you'll encounter similar-looking spaces and recycled monster types. It gets old after a while. And it's exacerbated by the fact that you must revisit dungeons three or four times each in order to clear all your quests. To help offset this repetitive loop, the game steadily introduces new biomes with new gimmicks — poisonous mushrooms, tidal waves, mine carts, falling embers, geysers, etc. — as well as eventful boss battles. These certainly help, but don't entirely eliminate the feeling of tedium.

Once you clear a dungeon, either by defeating a boss or fulfilling some other obligation, you'll return home to Almacia. Here you enter the game's second phase: town-building. Using materials and money collected out in the field, you can erect new buildings around your castle. Based on where you place them, and whether they're connected by roads, you'll earn performance modifiers to your stats. For example, the weapon shop will boost your attack, while the inn will increase your HP. This is an entertaining diversion, one that helps break up monotony in the action phase, but it could be so much more. Inti Creates missed a golden opportunity to make something akin to ActRaiser, with a more robust simulation element where players are responsible for the economic and population growth of the kingdom. As it stands, the strategy piece is underdeveloped.

The game itself is somewhat underdeveloped as well. Even with multiple dungeons, dozens of quests, and plenty of time reserved for town building, the campaign will draw to a close after only seven hours. Now, to be fair, there is a good amount of replay value. You can play through the campaign as one of four different classes, each of which plays and fights differently. The Imperial (my favorite) is a well-rounded knight who focuses on defense. The Wizard is a squishy magician who specializes in ranged attacks. The Alchemist is a tactician who lobs chemicals that inflict status ailments. And the Zipangu is a swordsman adept at rapid combo attacks.

No matter which hero you pick, you'll be treated to some charming pixel art. This isn't Inti Creates' most stylish or evocative work (in fact it's generic in places) but it's bright, welcoming, and perfectly aligned with the easygoing vibes of the narrative. As for the music, it's appropriately bouncy and fantastical, although not particularly memorable.

"Not particularly memorable" is a good way to describe Kingdom's Return as a whole. While it has an interesting premise and a clever gimmick, it doesn't do enough with those assets to stand out among other action-platformers, including those developed by Inti Creates in years past. With that said, it's far from bad. Thanks to snappy combat, four playable characters with unique talents, and appealing pixel art, it's a decent enough diversion.

Full Article - https://www.vgchartz.com/article/467724/kingdoms-return-time-eating-fruit-and-the-ancient-monster-ps5/
