When it comes to intense shooting and high-octane moments, CoD4 goes above and beyond other shooters for it's time. Whether it's simply intercepting terrorists in the Middle East or sneaking through enemies to take out a high valued target in Chernobyl, CoD4 will keep your heart pumping while anticipating what's around the next corner. While all may sound great for this intense shooter, certain uneven focuses in regard to it's overall value make this shooter leaves something more to be desired.
The campaign revolves mainly around two different characters: SAS FNG "Soap" MacTavish, USMC Sergeant Paul Jackson, and an unnamed member of an elite 4-man squad member (bear in mind this is in no way linked to the main storyline, the mission's just an extra). The story kicks off with a solid bang, at first revolving around you're usual training but then straight into the action as a simple possiblility of a nuclear threat aboard a tanker soon turns into a deeper-intertwined conspiracy then you would've anticipated.
You're thrusted into the story after learning this nuclear threat could be the "real deal" upon learning that the 2nd commanding blood-thristy leader Al-Asas has kidnapped and assassinated the president of his resiting Middle Eastern country (never mentioned in the game) and takes control of it. This forces the U.S. to retaliate and take care of Al-Asad. I can't exactly say the story's amazing but it's certainly consistent compared to other FPS. Upon the way, you'll encounter a variety of obstacles to get over with an awesome variety of gunpower at your disposal. Many of these obstacles are awesome and feel like each one is more memorable then the last. I don't think I can count all the memorable (whether some-what or greatly) times this game offered me on both hands. Although, the quarrel I'd have with the campaign is just how suprisingly short it is (so far the shortest CoD main series campaign) and the lack of co-op to back it up.
While CoD3 shows a better technical "prowess" than CoD4, it's still a fairly high presentable shooter when it comes to graphics. It may be behind games of that time like Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Mass Effect, and a few others it still shows a commending feature of having a high and steady framerate which gives reason to it's acolades of being the most photo-realistic console shooter for it's time. Even though it may not be the best when it comes to graphics, it still has an impressive onslaught of lighting, sound design, and solid character models although unimpressive scripted death animations in MP but that's a small quarrel in this vast array of praisabliity.
With a new setting comes new features and CoD4 has an onslaught to show: knife melee, modern weapons, custom "class-specialization" MP, a slew of new MP modes to the CoD series, and many other new things to the series (most of which being greatly implemented). The knife melee is now an instant kill with also having a lunge but of limited range.
When it comes to modern weapons, let's just say CoD4 goes above and beyond on the weapon variety and sound design for each one. Whether from the scripted parts of using a mounted grenade launcher on a helicopter to the simple M16 in all it's glory, each weapon has a unique feel to it adding only more to the rich experience of being a real war. It's also nice to note the improvements from CoD3's new features such as a simple pushing down of the sprint button without holding it to grenade idicators being more responsive considering a choked grenade could be right around the corner.
^Believe it or not, you wear this badass outfit on the first level
The MP on CoD4 has once again brought a change to the series as we know it. With the new classes system made, you're able to choose a certain weapon (upon which more become unlocked as you level up) such as that of CoD1 and 2 BUT you're now able to choose your side-arm, grenades and/or mines, and three different "perks". What these perks do is either give you more health, make you invisible on enemy radars, or let drop down to take a last stand by whipping out your side-arm while laying on the ground to go down in glory. Some of these perks are a bit uneeded and can feel like a filler at times. Either way the comprehesible yet hugely varied class system can make each person have a different loadout then the other.
Another new innovation to the series is the new "killstreaks" in which if you get 3,5, or 7 kills you can call in a UAV (enabling you+team to see all your enemies on your radar), mark a spot on the map for an airstrike, or call in a helicopter to kill any enemies in it's sights respectively. This feature is certainly cool but after awhile, it turns out that being the same old same old killstreaks don't have a heavier feeling of adaptablility then to that of players having different loadouts. Nevertheless, these features and other subtle new ideas brought to CoD4's MP make it worth playing for a long time even if the "bigger picture" of it all can seem a tad too cluttered.
Conclusion:
9.0 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has thrills and lots of them. While it seems a bit under-valued in terms of SP (and no co-op, online or splitscreen), it's still a rock solid one with an MP worth playing for a long time.
Pro's Con's
Thrilling SP w/ consistent story The SP is the shortest in all main CoD's
Amazing photo-realism and sound Any kind of co-op is unfound
Addictive MP...... .....although it can be a bit cluttered
Solid gameplay all-around
