Let's start out with the easiest part: Presentation.
The reason, why this is the easiest part, is because nothing needs to be said about the graphics. A blind, retarded monkey can tell this game looks orgasmic! So I'll just talk about the epic soundtrack, instead.
From the battle with Poseidon, to the theme that kicks in when you're about to kill/slaughter/cripple/pierce someone in the most gruesome way possible, to the awesomeness that plays whilst you're chasing that asshole Hermes, (God I hated that git! ) The soundtrack is pretty awesome. It's not on a Zelda standard, but to be fair, nothing else than Zelda is. Each song still fits the moment and I felt like I often didn't kill the bosses right away, just so I could listen to the music a little longer.
The gameplay is classic God of War. Not much to add there. I'm too lazy to go on to detail for the sake of those who have never played the GoW games. Sorry, you're gonna have to find another review for that.
I did feel overpowered at a few points, especially after I got my hands on the Nemean Cestus! (They're freaking awesome! ) I also found myself using the Nemesis Whip a little too rarely. I also found the Labyrinth quite frustrating. (It's not puzzles in general, that I don't like. For some reason I've never quite enjoyed the puzzles in GoW games... Don't really know why... )
And now let's get to the biggest and most frequent complaints about God of War III; First of all: The length. The first playthrough took me less than 10 hours. This is a HUGE disappointment. The game is SCREAMING for some DLC. The combat's been refined to the fullest, sure. But the story is just a bit too brief for my tastes. (Speaking of the story, it's quite simple when compared to earlier installments, but I don't mind it too much. At least there's no ridiculous plot twists. ) However, there are collectables and arena battles to keep you playing. But I was still expecting for a 15-hour campaign... Well, I suppose the game's better as a brief, but epic experience, than as a long, but painfully average one...
Also, the camera angles can be torturous. But I'll rather have it this way than trying to desperately control the camera, whilst trying to make a jump over a 100-meter wide pit with undead archers constantly harassing my ass. It's not as big of a deal as most reviewers say, though...
Oh and about the scale... *Ahem*

I think you see what I mean...
To those who think I'm being too negative, in this review, I've pretty much listed all of the not-so-great things about GoW III in this review. (In my opinion, anyways.) Yet I haven't come close to describing all of the awesomeness in this game.
The gameplay isn't a revolution from the other games, but that isn't what we wanted, was it? What we wanted was more God of War. And Sony Santa Monica has given us just that. We should all be very thankful to SSM for granting us this great series. Unfortunately, I fear this tale has met it's end. Oh well, it was a hell of a run either way...

@ frozone: the story isn't great but is sure better than average, the game itself is EXCELLENT (best hack n' slash of this generation), the graphics r unbelievably gorgeous (nothing else comes close), GOW3 is ridiculously undertracked, and u're very much full of it. >=) Message | Report |
