according to these numbers, the 360 version worldwide is only 180,000 ahead of the American ps3 numbers. WOW

darthdevidem01: I still think it's overtracked. There was like a 200k-250k difference with NPD numbers, and you're saying they sold that many bundles. And if so explain me this, how come the 360 didn't get a hardware boost from FXIII at all....

xbox 360 version hd special sale. So did god of war 3 & othr games. Bt PS3 versions didnt hve the sale. So xbox 360 sales went up, ps3 went dwn.

dnt get too excited, the sales are still bad on xbox 360.

Limiting yourself to exclusives is pointless. My favorite games this gen have been 3rd party.

I think it can reach 2 million

Also I think people want it to fail because they're worried Versus XIII will go multiplat too.

Mind you, I wouldn't approve of it going multiplat either if it's going to cause a change in plans, or limit the game in some way (multiplat moves will do that regardless of lead console), but if it happens, so be it. More people will enjoy it, and I have no issue with that.

Yeah PS3 didn't destroy it, because Square Ported it for the States and Others. and it's like 1.6/1.04.

Granted... If they would have ported it to 360 it wouldn't have likely had great sales at all in JPN. it could still become more skewed tho

I am not sure. But I believe Square-Enix Released it on both platforms as a safety net for the US
and other regions. Because at the time of
announcement the PS3 was not doing too well.
I think they didn't want to be stuck having their
major IP in the US on a system with a tiny
install base. But, it ended up they didn't likely
need the safety net.

The timed exclusives aren't essential titles though. They are mostly JRPGs and DLC.

The original Xbox had almost no appeal for fans of Japanese games. MS wanted to change that so they paid for several JRPGs.

The DLC exclusives are a small investment considering how much money Live Gold accounts generate.

Basically, I'm saying the timed exclusives aren't important and MS isn't dependent on them. They just improved some areas the original Xbox was weak.

TBL posted 23/03/2010, 04:09
@Mr Puggsley
Sure when you compare the sales to other JRPGS released for the console the sales are quite good.

Well ofcourse Sony is dependent on 3'rd party as well, no doubt about it, some of the greatest games released for the console this gen have been developed by 3'rd party studios.
But my point was they're not as dependent as MS, they've been as you mentioned throwing around money for most of the time to aquire timed exclusives, or exclusives all together.

Mr Puggsly posted 23/03/2010, 09:31
@ TBL
Well ultimately we don't know what their goal was so there is no point in debating that. But out performing the life time sales of almost every JRPG on the 360 in the first week is not a bad at all.

Lets not pretend the PS3 doesn't depend on 3rd parties as well. The 6 best selling games on the PS3 are 3rd party. FFXIII should make that 7 soon. Nintendo is the only company that can survive without a huge dependence on 3rd parties.

MS has thrown money around for mostly timed exclusives (which i assume is cheaper than full exclusivity). But they also have some very popular IPs under their belt. When it comes to software, they got the bases covered.

Thats just it I don't think MS are happy with the sales but I don't think they expected it to become a massive hit but their goal is (and has been since they released the 360) to take away as many exclusives as possible from the PS3, MS are very dependent on 3'rd party developers since they don't have the in house developers that Sony has and thats why MS have been so agressive in their strategy to aquire 3'rd party exclusives or to take away former PS3 ones.

I gotta hand it to them they're really doing everything in their power to make sure PS3 doesn't have a single advantage when it comes to software, and as much as I hate to admit it they're doing quite a good job

MS has paid Square and Namco for several JRPGs that don't even sell 640K life time. So how can they not be happy about the opening week of this game?

Also, the PS3 would have a saw a significant boost in hardware sales if FFXIII was a PS3 exclusive. But that didn't happen. I'm sure MS is happy about that as well.

FFXIII sold significantly better than any other PS3 game in Japan. It has about a 30% attach rate.

Believe it or not, the 360 has a better attach rate than the PS3 in Japan. So 300K would have been very possible. But this is just my prediction, its not worth debating.

If you say something that's blatantly untrue (MS saying it would sell better in the UK) or very bias, bear in mind someone might call you on it.

And there's no way an 360 version in Japan would have sold 300k there, but I know your love for MS would have you belive it :D

The exclusive advertising doesn't always lead to the best sales. For example, MS had RE5 advertising while Sony had Assassin's Creed 2 advertising. Notice a pattern?

Microsoft never said it would outsell the PS3 version in the UK. It was just some UK consumer website that came up with that prediction. Perhaps your PS3 fandom made you want to believe that.

I don't think anyone was talking about the "Japan advantage." But if it was released for the 360, it would have sold far more than 100K. I think it would have sold 300K - 400K and the 360 would have saw a nice sales boost. But that's just my prediction.

I understand you love your PS3. But try not to be so bias about this. 640K is a great opening. Few games a year open with that much.

@CChaos
So stating the obvious makes me a Sony fanatic, I was just saying that with all the exclusive advertising along with bundles they had for the game in the west I'm sure MS expected more sales for this game, MS even went as far as saying that FFXIII would outsell the PS3 version in the UK.

And to all those saying the PS3 had an advantage due to it's exclusive release in Japan, please take a minute and use your logic and you should realise that it would have never sold over 100k there.

I have to admit it, the sales are very good. Im a Sony user, but the sales for the first week in this version are very good. I dont like to see more FF titles in XBOX consoles, but i think that gonna happen.

Congratulations to all X360 owners that bought this, all of you gonna see more titles to your consoles.

Congrats square, and FF series that now have proven that the franchise can sale in whatever console and in whatever territory.

Well stop comparing these sales to the PS3. This was a highly anticipated game for Sony fans. Just look how the sales compared to other games.

Not a lot of games have an opening week of 640K on the 360 and PS3. The only games that do are major releases. Hence, this was a major release and it performed great.

Putting this on the 360 definitely was not a failure and Square knows the PS3 would get a majority of the sales.

With the same token, developers know shooters will perform much better on the 360. But bringing them to the PS3 is still worthwhile.

Bringing this game to the 360 was worthwhile and I hope it leads to more of the franchise on the 360. MS might even pay for that to happen if necessary.

@Mr Puggsley actually this is a pretty good reason to reconsider future multiplat FF releases, considering all the exlusive advertising MS put up for this game, and the almost 10 million advantage 360 has in USA dont make these sales impressive TBH. But hey thats just me, i could be way of to.

Good first week considering the precarious predicament the 360 version was in (2.5:1 pre-order gap, 576p shitform on the internets, epic bundle fail, etc.) Top-name jrpgs are doing better on the 360 than top-name wrpgs on the PS3 (where they sell like 2:1 or more on the 360). That is a positive sign. It proves to the haters that the 360 base isn`t all about the shooters. When you take into account all those HD twin owners who got the PS3 version, that means FF13 was a popular buy for 360-only owners at that ratio.

Perhaps Dead Space and Mortal Kombat would be released in Japan if they didn't have weird laws on censorship. Google "xbox censorship japan." You'll find a lot of interesting articles.

Either way, you just cherry picked two extremely violent western games. Yet you ignore the many, many western games that have been released in Japan.
